1956 lincoln 368

    I'm rebuilding a 368 lincoln and was wondering if you guys knew of anybody that has any info about it. What I'm wondering is how far can I bore this thing safely. From the looks I'll have to go at least .060 to clean up the cylinders. Also any historical info you guys may have would be great. By the way it's going into a 56 premiere convertible. Thanks
     
  2. They have pretty thick walls & .060 shouldn't be an issue, unless the block has a lot of core shift. You can always have it sonic checked if you want to be sure that .060 is OK.

    I was thinking it would be pretty safe. I saw on egge's website they make pistons up to .080 over. The block itself is in good shape, the bore was only right at 4.0in on all cylinders, but one cylinder had gotten some water in it and there's a bit of rust right at the top of the bore, that was my main concern. Thanks for the feed back .

The 368s supposedly can't be bored as much as some of the other Lincoln Ys as a rule (proportionately) because the patterns were allegedly reworked to go from the 317 bore of 3.800 to the 341's 3.937...but not to go to the 368's 4.0, & so the block walls are .031 thinner on each side on a 368. Dunno if that's true, but any way you look at it, there's a lot of meat there. :)

    She's all done. Ended up going .080 over. Runs great. Got most of the parts from egge and the cam came from Camcraft in Maryland.
    I'll try to post some pics later.

    Very cool, what's it in? I had a 302, same basic idea just smaller pistons and I believe different crank (cast). That's been awhile back, but I remember there was plenty of cyl wall. Cool to hear it worked out.

    It's in a 56 Premiere convertible. It's an original car, I work for a collector. I really enjoyed this engine build, it's an engine I've never worked on and that's always alot of fun for me.

    Do you work for that Lincoln collector guy in Florida? He is no joke about Lincs.

    That is a nice looking engine. When you get it running, make and video and post it. I'd like to hear it run.

    Actually , the guy I work for has mostly GM products in the collection. Mid 50's through early 70's, full size cars. The car is running now. If I get some spare time I'll try to take a video, never actually done it.

    beautiful job,,those engines look so cool,,,,,
    i had one in my old 56 ford f100...
    got rid of it back in the 80s and put in 351C (didnt know any better,,i was a dumbass)..
    always wanted another one,,,,,even more so now!
