is the pay you would make off set the cost of living? for example i lived in las vegas years ago and minium wage was $5.50 because of no state tax due to the casinos ect. so you where able to get by on such a small amount. but in CT minium wage is $7.50 something due to taxes on pretty much everything ect.

Better check on income and other taxes before you get all carried away. Some of the scandinavian coutries have back-breaking taxes to support their social services.

A friend of mine just moved to Norway a couple of months ago from the Netherlands
He and his girlfriend both make more money there than they did in the netherlands and they are basically living from 1 salary. They are living rural though , might be cheaper than in a major city
He had a people help him get settled and line possible jobs before they moved

I've lived in both Bergen and Oslo. PRICEY but its neat. This was in the early 90s and it seemed like it was the 50s. I was on expense account and being paid out of USA. Though conversations point to a pretty high tax rate on the locals. Nice place for someone who likes the outdoors and friendly people. Beautiful scenery. If I was going to go and live on the local economy, I'd have a job before I went any farther.

Norway is OK, if you live in the big cities like Oslo it is expensive to live, but the salary is also pretty good, so I guess it weights up. But if you move a little bit out of the big city, the living is not so bad either. Like NorwegianV8 said, it is like CT in the weather.

Any of the norway hamers have any web sites i should check out like a monster.com for norway or any other job related site? any websites to look for appartments? if i go ahead with the move it's going to be a year to a year and a half away. i plan on coming to norway around september, would this be a good time of year to come or would there be a better time of year? also when i do fly out is there anyone who would want to show me around, good bars, someplaces to watch some good death metal show ect.?

Well, there is some job related sites, but they are mostly in Norwegian, like http://www.finn.no and http://www.monster.no ! on Finn you'll also find apartments. If you come to oslo, I can at least show you around here. Springtime is allway best, best weather at least

I moved from Essex CT to Sweden.
I have not been to Norway but the hotrod scene here is pretty big. Cost of living is pretty high but the standard of living is some of the highest is the world ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_Development_Index ) look at the bottom of this page.
When I moved over I really messed up though. Sweden allowed me to move over and everything I brought was let in tax free. I should have loaded up on old cars. Now if I want to bring another one over I have to pay Swedish tax when it comes in.
My advice is really plan it out, bring over cars and parts if you can. They sell for 3x the price over here.

I don't live both places, but I visit my buddy in LA at least once a year, he has also lived in Norway for several years. His biggest problem was the weather, but you being from CT would make the transition easier, I suppose.

The Hot Rod scene is small compared to the US, but it's growing. As of now it's mostly a Street Rod scene... The reason is that you couldn't get them registered until about 10-15 years ago, and people haven't had enough time to get bored by billet yet...

One major difference from the US is that the government is very involved in people's daily lives. Income tax isn't that bad, but sales tax, liquor tax, gas tax and all the other taxes are pretty high. There's little poverty, low crime, bad weather, free health care, and it's maybe just a little bit boring... :)

The job market is good, but some jobs may require you to learn norwegian, it depends on what you do. As said earlier, it actually is quite easy living...

Do a Google search for expats and Norway, also check the official site for Norway and CIA World Factbook, if you haven't already...

Well i guess you've got the main info already........btw,hansa1100 aint jokin' bout the liquor tax,ouch!:D..........one of my best mates moved to stavanger for love, bless him,and when i've visited i've gotta say the quality of life over there, despite the cost of living,is fantastic........as above, beautiful surroundings for the most part, nice n clean, people are helpful and the hardcore rod guys are very hardcore into it,as i've found most scandinavians to be.......also saw a lot of muscle cars when i was over there,is that a trend guys?? My mate regularly sends me gasoline magazine (which i cant read, but its a good mag lol)and 'veteran biler' which has all sorts of old tin for sale in it.......tho i've noticed prices have really raised in the last coupla years......and getting in parts/cars with import tax is expensive......so like someone above said,if you could ship a load out with ya,you'd do yourself/others a favour!

I have one other question, I picked up The Rosetta Stone software but is does not have Norwegian on it. Is there any software you can recommend to learn Norwegian? or is there a similar language I can learn that is some what interchangeable with Norwegian. From the short research I have done about the language, Danish is somewhat close should I learn that so I have a stepping stone or am I wasting my time learning Danish when I can really focus on Norwegian givin i get software or a book?

Id say Swedish language is closer to Norweigian, than Danish.
So go directly to the Norweigian (or Swedish)

But we understand each other quite well.
Here in Sweden most of people younger than 60 understand English (even American English). But dont like to speak it. And i guess it similar in Norway to.

And the good thing is that its close to Sweden :) Where we have the Hot Rod Scene ;-)

Some years ago you could not build or drive a Hot Rod in Norway, i think it's better now.
But not as good as in Sweden :)

Finaly Norway is not a member of the European Union, but hey have oil ;-)

third generation myself, grandparent could hardly speak english, but lived in parklund, Washington where most spoke nordsk. My dad, mom spoke very little. Get on the "sons of norway" web site. really cool, learn to speak norwegian in 5 min. per month. Btw if you don't ski, learn. You wll never be bored. That is where skiing started. Can't work on your hot rod all the time, at least that's my excuse. Goo tur!

Linguists like to say that norwegian is danish spoken in swedish... Meaning danish is similar in writing, but swedish is similar in speaking. :) So just for reading, danish is ok to start with!

And yes, I think I read somewhere that we have the shortest work year in the world. :D

    Hello!

Our former Boss, king Olav the V.

    Hi Ryan

How are the plans coming along?

Like the others have said. Living here is easy and very nice.
Hi taxes means also a lot of benefits.
Norway goes in high gear these days. Finding work is generally no problem at all. All kinds of industri/markets are looking for manpower.

What do you do for a living today?
    Whats your education/ work experience?

I'll be more that happy to help you out.
I live 100 km south east of Oslo. close to the Swedish border. Place is called Skjeberg.
2 minutes walk to the sea. Absolutelt lovey in the summers.

I work in a company that does refurbisment/repairs on Hydro Power generators. We are constanly looking for personell. Mechanics etc.

I speak English and you can call if you like. It's easier and quicker to share info over the phone. Let me know and I'll PM you my phone number.

    Paul
