28-29 vs. 30-31 deck-lid?

Is there a large difference in overall contour between the two? Picked a nice original on the cheap assuming it was 30-31, but if I drop it in place with the top aligned the bottom overhangs a bit - probably an inch or so. To clarify, when I say overhang I mean it fits well until the last ten inches or so then juts out as if the back panel is an inch too far forward.

Seems to be an easy enough fix, I could slice the sides and re-contour before re-skinning or just move to correct shape with brute force over something big and round. But I thought any discussion from this could help someone in the future.

As an aside this is a rumble lid and what was left of the car appeared to be... not for a rumble seat.

Same deck lid. The only difference is the way the rumble seat latch is attached changed from 29 to 30.

  4. Thanks for asking, as i had the same question!!! I just bought a 31 coupe roller as a project (picking it up this weekend, cant wait!) and the guy I am buying it from showed me the decklid/rumble lid and said he got it at a swap meet and thought it might be the wrong year as it also didnt seem to have the same contour.....

Lots of loose decklids get "stuff" stacked on top of them and flatten them out. Here's how I fixed one:

Cut a couple slots in the verticle lip, and a little ways into the verticle return inside an inch or so into the flat of the center panel. But do not cut into the horizontal portion of the trough that backs up to the skin. These cuts should be right where the arch needs to be tightened.

Loop a pair of those lightweight tiedown straps around the decklid, front to back, with the ratchet on the outside. Then hang the decklid on it's hinges.

With the deck in place you can crank the straps a little at a time till the curve comes back to match your rear quarter panels.

Now, before you MIG weld those cuts back up, loosen the straps just a very slight bit, 'cause the welding will cause a minute bit of shrinkage and the arch will get slightly tighter.

Make sure it's seating properly all the way down the drip side rails before you alter anything.
