Well, not really. But, it's rare to find this many '30's and '40's era vehicles in one place. These are located in Demopolis, AL... yeah, that picture ain't so great..but there's more... The story is one we've all heard.. someones hoards stuff, won't sell anything for years.. then the land is sold and all the cars are disposed of. Well, luckily this salvage yard owner realized that there were usable parts on some of these, and saved all he could. And, the prices are fairly reasonable.. I didn't inquire on any specific one, but he said prices would be from $300 to $500 on most of them. The bad news is they were apparently sitting in a swampy area, because most of them have major portions of the frames and suspension rusted away. Several had totally broken in half being moved to his yard. Now, what teh heck is this little 4-banger? A really small engine.. had the ford script on the head.. And what the heck is this? Is this the infamous "knee-action" suspension of chevy's? Well, I thought the pictures would show up in the post, but they just show up as links.. I musta did something wrong.. All the pictures can be seen here... http://public.fotki.com/Kustm52/hwy_80_auto_parts/ Brian
...You and Mike have all the fun, while the rest of us 'Bama boys have to work! Hated to miss that field trip, some interesting stuff to see for sure. Has to make you wonder just how much stuff is still out there sitting, waiting to be found. And I am just referring to the "Cedar Grove" old tin stash -reed
****! On my trip back from Hot Springs last month, I stayed in Demopolis, AL... The sign for the town is bigger than most of the buildings.
Reed, I've got a line on another stash I'm going to check out Tuesday..take a break from the boat building and go with me... I'd liek to add all of these to the "cedar grove stash".. there's gonna be a hell of an estate sale here one day.. But, I may have to take rocky's advice and buy at least the '35-6-7's.. and there was one ratty '40 coupe... they'd bring about a million at the "garret johnson" auction.. Well, I answered my own question..the suspension pic was '34-'35 chevy knee action. Somebody's got to know what this 4-banger is.. there were two of them there...
Well, since everyone else is resurrecting posts from the dead, I might as well.. Still wondering what the 4-banger engine is.. surely someone knows. Brian
I gotta go through Demopolis, AL again in 2 weeks, is there an address or phone for the guy with what could be saved? I probably won't be able to bring back anything bigger than will fit in the trunk of a Carolla, but I could do some reconnaissance.
Not T, A, or B/C. Might be an early Forties (41-46?) Ford PU banger. I've never seen one, but do know that they exist. Or what about a 41-45 Ford jeep engine? I don't know anything about those. Were those Ford jeep engines marked as "Ford"? The tailgate was.
Back from the dead, a year later. Did anyone ever check on these cars?? I have not had the time or the funds to go back and check on them.. may have to go take a look. Brian
The engine looks like a British Ford 10 Sidevalve 1172cc engine. Found in anglias, prefects, populars, fordsons etc. If it is they are a 10hp motor and also came out in 8hp (997 cc's?) versions - found in Model Y's, Model C's etc
The Ford banger is British Ford...don't know details to exactly ID, but it was made in several sizes and variants from '32-33 into the fifties...Model Y, Ford eight and ten, Anglia. Only the Anglia type cars were ever over here in any significant numbers. Inside, there are lots of details much like USA Ford practice. The whole thing is almost a miniature mirror image of a Model B engine.
save your gas and dont go, none of them are there anymore. i go through demopolis on my way back and forth to school in jackson. i remeber seeing them a coupla times last year but i never got to stop. but from what i can see they are all gone but just a couple of miles east there is a 4 dr. '54 chevy for sale.
Damn, probably crushed them all. That's what I get for waiting... being a broke sum***** ****s... Brian
