The 318 poly is a decent motor, takes severe use well A four barrell options would help ..You can still find those You can find multiple carb intakes too but $$$ Many "LA" motors, IE new style 318,360 etc will work on them but, truthfully, its easier to swap in a B or RB engine One of the mag's did a hop up on a poly 318 and got 420 hp out of it ..think it cost around $8,000 to do it
The poly can be built for serious HP, add a 4bbl, Wiend makes one, better cam and flow the heads. This is a canted valve engine, GM swiped this design element for thier Chevy big blocks, the heads will flow great with not a whole lot of work. keep the solid valve train. the crank is forged and shot peened as well as the rods from the factory. easy to make 350-400 hp. Serious porting, and maybe stroking to go beyond. Like any engine, get all the air you can, in and out as effinciently as possible, cam selection is critical. Whats the vehical? I'm contemplating putting a poly in my 17 DB roadster, right now I have a LA318 in it.
**** Landy makes a blower intake for it, there have been a ton of articles on strokers for them, check out moparts or just google poly motor. TTI also makes headers for them.
There is a good website for these engines: http://www.geocities.com/motorcity/track/4164/ I've found alot of good info on this site.
The new link is: http://www.geocities.com/polyman64 FYI. Bob lost the p***word to the old one. Bummer, too - it gets more web traffic! ~Jason
a friend of mine had a 6 pack intake for one of those, I had it for a while in my attic and gave it back to him some time later, found out shortly after I gave it back that he stuck it out for the garbage, said it wasn't worth anything and didnt want to store it any more...arggggggggggggg......
I can hear the tears falling over at the Yahoo Group: http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/318poly/ Hell, MY tears are flowin'... they only made about 1200 of 'em, between '56 & '68 or so! ~Jason
The usual hot rod rebuild will provide surprising results. Try 10:1 comp (forgings) elect ign, 4-bbl carb and moderate cam profile. Stuff in the largest valves you can. Headers are a must. The 63 also gives you a 'short' crank so the a-500 or a-518 is a bolt-up.
Yep. '62 - '66 ('67 in Canada) Poly 318s are WAY closer to an LA 318 than the '57 - '61, and greatly increase your ability to have things just bolt up. ~Jason
