i was reading in a book and it mentiond something about a dropped tube axle split in the midle used like an early form of IFS have u ever seen this do you have this on ur ride?
fatman sells a kit to convert a beam axle to center mounted ifs... i remember a thread a while ago where someone explained the ill effects on camber and handling as the beams moved independantly...
Here's the thread that already discussed this at length: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=222743&highlight=fatman+axle
If you split the beam, it then turns into twin beams. Twin beams are the dumbest parts ever invented and they handle like ****. Don't do it you'll waste your money.
Yep, Grandpa's Twin I Beam suspension in his 64 Ford pickup rode like... well... a pickup. I have seen a setup on a roadster where the left axle attached to the right frame and the right axle to the left frame do decrease camber change. Still doesn't sound like a great idea to me.
If allards ran it i cant see it's all bad, if set up right, definatly not like a modern style ifs but still probably works ok
You just end up with a system that handles no better than a normal straight axle with transverse spring, is ugly, and is complicated. It's not a new idea, guys were doing it in the '30s on hillclimb compe***ion cars. Ford's long I-beams got it about as perfect as it will likely ever be, go for a drive in a '96 F150 and tell us what you think.
