Hey everybody, we're putting on a street racing deal similar to the flashlight drags featured recently in Hot Rod. We've gotten permission to use the old dragstip in****umption Illinois for a few events over the summer. Got some details to work out with the owner but its about 99.5% a sure thing. Rules are gonna be pretty simple. It's a 1/4 mile track but we're gonna start off running 1/8 for safety reasons. Mufflers will be mandatory but slicks will be allowed. You can do your own track prep if you want as long as you don't hold up the flow of things. No alcohol, no whining, no complaining. This is for fun and it's going to be a family friendly atmosphere. Race who you want, negotiate lengths, whatever. We're really going for a street racing vibe but safe and legal. No timing equipment and probably a flag or arm drop start. Really hoping to see some period rods there. It's the perfect location for it. First one will probably be around the beginning of May. Looks like the entry fee will probably be $20 to race $6 to spectate with discounts for teenagers and pre registration. Kids 12 and under will get in free. This is gonna be a somewhat crude event to start out due to the fact that the grounds are sparse, no electricity anymore, no bleachers, we'll be using port a pottys and such. The asphalt is still pretty good and we'll find someone to handle concessions and all. This is going to cost way more than we thought to get started so we are looking for sponsors. We have to iron out some insurance issues and have a meeting next week with the property owner to figure out some other details. I'd love to hear your input here or email me at ncperformance@hotmail.com. Watch our website ncperformanceinc.com for more details. Thanks everybody. Greg <!-- / message -->
this sounds great. i used to live in Western PA and know the guys very well that do the flashlight drags. I want to start something like this at a little airport up the road a piece out here in OH, so i'm interested in seeing how you work out your "insurance problems". Good luck, and if all goes well i can make it out there. -ace
Sounds like a great gig, but don't know where****umption is. Can you give us more info on the location? There's several of us in so. east Illinois that might be interested in attending.
Sounds awesome! Keep us posted. Are you going to let anyone race, or are you going to have a year cutoff? If you don't you'll have everything from hot rods to muscle cars to import tuners... mostly the latter 2, which will keep the period hot rods away... but you'll be more likely to pay for everything with the muscle car/tuner crowd The Pileup started small like this and we got things rolling with sponor and vendor money up front. I'll email you some stuff I looked it up on Yahoo maps... it's near Springfield.
Everybody is welcome but we're really pushing for the kind of stuff we do at the shop, period stuff, Pontiac musclcars, and LT1 LS1 GM stuff. Imports aren't too big around here but you may see a fair amount of sport bikes. We can't afford to limit the crowd to one type of car because it's gonna cost alot of money just to do this thing so we need whoever we can get to pay the entry fee. Can't we all just get along anyway. You culture guys and gals will feel welcome. Should have my rusty krusty 38 going for it too. Later, Greg
I will be there!!! keep us posted Assumption is a bit east of Taylorville IL maybe 60 miles south east from Springfield
I bought the****umption building and relocated it to our BMX track a bunch of years ago. Last I saw it though it was in sad shape. Good luck reviving the drag strip. Keep us posted.
Not much left of the old place but the pavement aint too bad. Wouldn't want to run try and run 1000hp on it but for street cars on the 1/8 it'll be fine. Lotta work to do first though.
sounds like a blast....would be nice to keep it geared towards a traditional/muscle event.....but sounds like fun...keep us posted..
post this on the HAMB calendar if you haven't already. Sounds like fun, maybe a bunch of our club members would come. Bring this post back up every once in awhile, keep us up-dated. Tin Butcher's 2nd Annual "Scrap Drive" June 7th, Belevidere, Illinois.
You're talking about my back yard dude. I live in the sand trap!!! Every sat night during the summer as a child i was kept up by all the beautiful music coming from there. I remember seeing the Army funny car, the little red wagon, shirley and the rest of the gang. There's a underground stream that crosses the 1000 foot mark, so theres a little dip, haha. Railjobs beware. Dude they stored corn on the strip 2 years ago. Clean up will be fun. Gonna need some work on the return lane though. I'll get some pics of the track when it gets warm from the air so you guys can see it. Tell johnny joe blue says what's up.
