Mate that Porsche may have been a Chic Magnet for you once......but now it's time to just Cruze the Highways in that Roadster........Bloody good decision I reckon.;)

Much as I love an early 356 - I think a `36 3W is about as cool as it gets.

Clever how you got your wife involved. If you like your decision, you take credit, and if you wallow in regret you can blame it on her.

You speak of Fordwerke. Henry Ford was mostly in control of the overseas opperations BEFORE WW2. Most of the comments I'm reading disreguard the fact that this was at a time (before WW2) when most people of the United States were trying to remain newtral or were in denial of what was happening in the first place. Therefore for Ford and many other US companys it was buisness as usual (hindsight is 20/20). However, Fordwerke was clearly under the direct control of the Nazi government by 1941. The meetings of the board of directors had been suspended, and didn't resume until after the war. Ford was unable to control the company.

That being said, you are correct. Fordwerke became an instrument of the Nazi state.

The irondoctor did ask for our opinions on the Porsche vs. the Ford. I was showing my opinion was not pulled out of the air as some have alleged. Some may feel I went too far... Sorry that's how I feel about a Porsche. Sorry I brought it up. I'm going back out in the shop to resume my work on some AMERICIAN IRON.

This is rediculous. I love how threads get takin' over with little respect to the person who actually started it. There are some very ignorant comments in this thread.

Seems to me you sold the 356 because your heart was somewhere else. Now follow through, get your 35 and make sure you post some pictures! Welcome to the first years of the Fat Fender Gang!

I bought my '49 MG TC from the guy that had serial #80003. It was a basket-case in his garage at the time. Went back later to show him the MG and found out he'd died...traced the speedster by serial number to the guy that had bought it from the estate. It was now a Pebble Beach winner...sent him the photos of the car as I'd seen it in the garage.:D

    Thats allright.
You have a right to your messed up opinions, just like everybody else.

Mine is that the VW is in fact a British Car.:D

Porsche Sr. was in a French Jail when the Brits put the Machines back in the Bombed out Factory, and started building Volkswagens.
This was a new name for the KDF Wagen.
And the factory was now in the British zone, and under British leadership (Ivan Hirst )

The French were probably more concerned with the Jeep version of the Beetle ( Kubelwagen ) and the work Porsche did on German Tanks, than a couple of pre-production KDF Wagens that were used for Propaganda & to get people to pay money for a car they were not going to own ( war broke out before production started )

If it wasnt for the Brits, that would have been the end of it...
And the Bug would have been a obscure deadend in the history of Cars.

The Germans didnt get control of the Volkswagen Factory untill years later...

I had the same problem a year ago. One of my customers was selling his 31 Ford coupe he had built in 1969. The coupe had a B engine with an original Cragar OHV head, 39 Ford tranny, juice brakes, Winfield carb, winfield cam, etc... I told my wife I wanted the Ford and that I should sell my 911 to buy the coupe. She said that if i sold the Porsche she would divorce me! So I bought the coupe and kept the Porsche.

Two months ago a got a phone call from the guy I sold my 1970 Dodge Challenger to 22 years ago. He said he wanted to know if I was interested in buying it back. Again, I told my wife I would sell the Porsche to buy the Challenger. She gave me the same response "no Porsche, no marriage." I kept the 911 and bought the Challenger. At least I know my wife likes the Porsche.

I have a "52" pre A that I'm thinking of chopping just to piss off the blue bloods.
I have a 55 Speedster replica that is a blast to drive to the 356 Porsche events. Even had one well versed dude tell his kid "Yes they had fiberglass Speedsters in 55 , they were well ahead of their time" DUH.
So much for belonging to the "Registry" I guess.
I had a 58 that had disc brakes on the front, greeze fittings on all the door hinges and a greeze fitting on the speedo cable, now them boys was thinking.
Of you ever get the chance to read the 356 Registry mag. check out the prices of anything in it, nothining cheap.
    Before I get bashed for posting this I have a 49 Merc.Sled.

Everybody missed the real story here.
    1. You have a wife that encourages you to buy a hot rod (and not remodel the bathroom with the money?)!
    2. Your wife knows that cute vintage Porsches attract fast-track 24 year old girls who think you're rich.
    3. You better buy that Ford fast before your wife remembers the remodeling ideas shes had for the bathroom!

You should have kept the porsche until you get your ford then you could really decide if your done with it or if it was just a faze.

I love porsches, 911 and 356, especially 356's. got lucky enough to drive dad's '60 super 90 cab some and it was incredible sitting on the floor as well as a 74 (targa) and 86 (cab). the '74 911 was more fun with its twin big carbs (it was tune by the local shop).. still nothing like the sound of a one running thru the gear and the rpm's screaming. Once drove my cousins 930 turbo, incredibly fast.. but still thought the 74 was more fun.... Dad had a vw thing also.. much like the 356 regarding power...

I have always wanted a 356 coupe slightly lowered with painted steelies and small caps..

Whether or not you did the right thing is an answer you can only get from yourself.
