So, who's running cheater slicks on the street?

Had any problems with Johnny Law not appreciating your "bald" tires?

I like the look of Hurst stuff, but the whole "retread" thing makes me a little nervous.

I've never heard of Towel City until this week.

The new Coker/ Firsetones look great but dang, they are pricey.

  2. I'm running a set of Hursts on my 49 Fleetline. I haven't run them on a road trip yet or less than good weather, so can't tell you about that. Haven't been stopped, although I had car trouble and an officer stopped by to check on me and didn't say anything about them.

I ran Hursts for a while on my truck. The tire shop had to use a ton of weight to get them to balance on a steel wheel. That's alot of mass at the very outside edge of the tire. No trouble with the law, but I did get stuck in wet grass once. And everything that everyone has ever told you about running them in the rain is absolutely true.

i've got the firestones on my 32; got caught in a huge downpour going home from the gasser renunion. did not have the problems i expected with the slicks. they held the road pretty good in an inch of standing water.i did not try anything stupid though. as for jhonny law;we'll see.

  5. Do a search, there are at least 1328 threads on the topic. Key words are Hurst and Cheater

I got the Hurst 10.5 Cheaters with the 2 grooved treads. Streets were wet one day. Went around a corner, slowly and rear end started to come around.

I am going to run cheaters on mine some day .

  9. I've been running them for 3 years. Stay out of the rain/water. Most cops don't have a clue but the tires say "not for highway use" on them...

  10. Haven't run my Hurst's yet but I think these should be ok in wet grass.... Cody custom cut the grooves and my casings have DOT stamped in. Nice tires.

  12. Out of 50 or 60 threads they sure did. The truth is out there. Unfortunately in this modern day of instant gratification folks dont wanna dig for info. I for one have posted several times that I have never had issues with the police.

If he would have said at the beginning, "sorry I cant find what I am looking for, has anyone been stopped by cops for running Cheaters?" I would not have had an issue. But we avererage 2 Hurst threads a week or so. Why not just tag that question onto an exhisting thread? Like the one from FREAKIN Hurst that is still on page one?!?!?!?!??!:D:eek:;)

Tman, if YOU know it's been posted before, and YOU know that theres tons of info already on this site, then why do YOU read and reply to the question? Not being a jerk, just honestly curious. I don't understand that. I haven't been around that long and am looking into the cheater slick thing, and appreciate some of the newer questions that have come up. Sometimes it's a topic I don't think of searching for, but when I read the thread I go "oh yeah, good idea. Interesting." Anyway, just wondering why you are wasting your time???

Wow, I didn't realize I needed to ask my questions beginning with the word "Sorry"

But, you used 4 posts telling us what a bunch of assholes we are for wasting bandwidth and didn't really constribute to our discussion much.

Ask away, those tires are fine to run on the street, just don't drive on them when its raining, they hydro about 25 mph...

  17. Hell, look how easy that was. No gettin the pants in a wad or nuthin. That's what I love about this place.

  18. I understand your question man. I think the same things sometimes when i post a "search..heres the keywords" reply.

It comes down to folks being lazy or not knowing how to search. My first reply was honest without predjudice.

If you look through all those threads in my two searches (well over 50 threads?) you will see myself, Ryan and others with the same response on most of the threads. Not using the fact that I have been online here for many years etc.....but, many of us get tired of responding to the same question over AND over. I have seen some great HAMBers quit posting because they end up retyping the same tech info..........zman has answered the nailhead threads so many times he has the info saved and he pastes it in his reply! He is FUCKING tired of answering the same basic questions on a certain topic!

Here is an example. After Suhr's post on louvers today I got a wild hair and dug out some steel barstock I had. I thought "lets finally make that die". My first thought was "damn........I know I have a magazine article on the history of louver styles but I dont wanna dig tonight".........then i thought about throwing up a thread asking for input........................"wait a minute, that would be lazy and hypocritical on my part after that post" So, I did a SEARCH. I found KiwiKevs ongoing louver post and found the dimentions he used for his early, round style louvers....................and you know what? I learned more than just copping out and throwing up a quick question! Now, if you excuse me, I have some more louver research to do.......:)

  19. Sir, read my last response and then go back and dig through all those threads I linked for you. I bear you no ill-will. With my first reply I was just trying to help, maybe you searched with the wrong criteria? I dunno. You have simply asked a VERY common question that pops up every few days on the HAMB.

Understood. It's all good. I've found TONS of info through searches, as well as had lots of questions that are very specific to my scenario answered on this board. I love it. Now, back to the topic at hand. SLICKS!

I've found when one visits a website so much that policing other members takes precedence over the topic and rolling your eyes and getting all agitated because someone already asked that question in June of 2005, it might be time to get some fresh air.

I just wanted to hear about some real-life everyday use stories of some really cool looking tires so in the next week or so I can give five hundred dollars to Alliance Vendors Coker or Hurst.

I like smoky burnouts more than drama.

  22. Good reply, so I will restate what I have said before:D

I had my Hursts on my 54 and the Touring. They are fine on the street, ran bias plys and radials on the front with no ill effects.

They SMOKE like a wet log on a fire. They need TONS of heat to stick. I got mine gooey after a minute long dumbass burnout for show in a pit.....(might have been 2 minutes,GV will LOVE to hear that one)

Normal burnouts in the waterbox are for your ego, they dont stick that well. Better than radials or street bias plies, worse than slicks.

In the rain............i see you live in Az? You prob grew up in the snowbelt? Drive em in the rain like you are on snowpacked conditions. Caution and a light foot is the key. They break loose without warning, good training for Bonneville however!

Wear, mine have 5000 miles on em with countless burnouts, still lots of meat, the sidewalls were starting to show wear long before the tread got close to thin.

Cheers! But please, do a deeper search next time!

I have Radirs on my '31. I like 'em. We're lucky to not have the law hassle us too much about that sort of thing down here. I have other cars for the rain, and a pair of treaded tires for when the weather is iffy. That's the only concern I would have.

Don't take Tman the wrong way. If you stay around here for 5 or 10 years, you'll get more where he is coming from. Plus, it's like -4 where he is and he's in the garage making louvers. You might come across as a little cranky too.:)

I actually spoke with (forgot his name already) at Hurst for awhile last week. He said that they cap the Coker Radials and it makes a GREAT radial slick that rides like a dream and handles great for a street tire. I thought that was pretty cool. I'm thinking of getting a set of the radial wide white slicks for my '54. Now, I just need to tap into the kids college funds to buy them!

  27. Screw those little leaches! Tell em to join the Guard and get reduced tuition since daddy needs hotrod parts!

And Ryan is running Cokers capped by Cody at Hurst.

I have run the Coker/Firestone 8.20-15's, and now I'm running the Radir 10.00-15's on the back of my '55 Chevy.

I've never got ANY crap from the 5-0, but they're pretty lenient around here (as far as hot rod stuff goes).

The car has a fairly hot tunnel rammed 406 sbc (went 11's in an s-10 with a single 4 bbl), a th350 with a 3500 converter, and a '57 Pontiac rear with a 5.13 gear.

I've driven both in the rain, AND SNOW.

The Radirs LOOK way better than the Firestones.

On dry pavement, at normal highway pressures, the Firestones hooked WAY better than the Radirs; running mostly flat, the Radirs hook better than the Firestones.

The Firestones were better in the rain, mostly like a normal tire; but the Radirs were much better than I'd expected.

In the snow, they're about the same, which is again, not as bad as I'd expected.

This car will annihilate the tires even when dry, but as long as you pay attention, and drive like you're running slicks in the rain (or snow!) it does fine (not that unlike driving a 2wd pickup in the snow).

Hope this helps at least a little!
    Steve
