I have a dilemma. My car is stranded on my friends street(neighbors love it-not) with a flat bias ply tire. I wanna ditch the 14's and go with 15's and radials. Here's the problem. I gotta move it tomorrow, no time to order rims or go to a swap meet. Can I cheat and mix radials and bias on one axle for about 5 miles? How about if I put two radials on the same rear axle and bias in front? I've driven some really squirrelly cars before, but I've never tried this before, is it completely an insane idea or can I do it if I take it slow and easy? I'm thinking I can pull it off. Someone please tell me they've done it! Thanks y'all and wish me luck!
5 miles,,,? YOU CAN DO IT!!!!,,,, actually,i wouldnt want to have a vehicle set up premanetly like that,,, but you will be ok....
If they are on the drive axel I would say no Inless you are stranded in middle of nowhere If in say non drive axel I would say it is not best but you ar not driving across country It is best to have one or the other not mix But desprate tomes need desperste measures How bad do you need to move car The only suggestion I would have as a concern is if drive axel if at all possible use same size and type or you could messup the dif Thanks Ray
i would try and do a hundred ,,,,, ..just so i can say that the next time some one brings up bias & radials..
No, Your car will spontaneously catch fire. Seriously... I wouldn't even think twice about it. There's no reason that at relatively low speeds for a limited distance there would be any problem.
OK thanks you guys! That's just the encouragement I needed. You're right, I'll make sure the rears are both bias, and run the odd radial on the front. That should be good enough for government work and to get the dang thing home. That'll buy me some time to get things taken care of the right way.
Back when I was 17 and DUMB i decided that I was going to do some major tire smoking burnouts in my beastly 4 cylinder Dakota. I had an extra rim and tire laying around so i put it on. It was Bias ply and the other 3 tires were radials. It was slightly taller too. I drove around all night doing burnouts with my friends. I know I must of went at least 100 miles and reached the blazing top speed of my truck (85) once or twice. I really didn't notice much pf a difference in handling at all. I finally smoked it till it popped too. I would say that you will be fine.
You'll only offend the purists and snobs, and yourself if you're picky about handling, road walking, etc...but it's not going to cause a permanent dimensional rift in the universe. Good to see you're going to get the car home safely
i wouldnt recomend two on the back, i have had 2x radial front, 2x rag on the rear and at 30mph plus the car was all over the road, i am not a purist, i am a genuine death trap driving maniac. rags up front with radials on the rear seems not so bad but rags on the back and radials upfront makes it near impossible to keep in one lane, you will find the rear wants to sway around everywere and you are constantly trying to get the car straight.
Thanks you guys! I just got home, drove it with one radial on the front and after 5 minutes I forgot it was even there. Turned out to be nothing. I've just always read about how D A N G E R O U S it is to mix tires. I'm sure its not a good idea, but it'lll be fine for a week or so. Thanks all!
ive done it......to get to the tire shop and back to mount some new bias ply's. had radials on the back.....bias on the front. just be smart, and keep the distance relatively short, and you'll be fine.
