Just wanted to get some input on the position of my motor. Anyone have any suggestions? The intake and carb are only temporary and eventually will be a 3x2 setup. Does it need to go higher or lower? thanks
Cool rod to say the least!! I would think it's a matter of taste. Carbs look killer when above the cowl but on a rod as high as yours (not saying yours is to high) It is just right as far as motor height.
Judging from your photos you have yours sitting in about the same relation to the body as mine. If I did it over I would lower my engine a little. With a three duce set up getting the dist in requires the removal of the rear carb and its real tight against the firewall. Also I have issues with air cleaner clearance with my radiator support rods. Pic shows how much I had to remove of the firewall to get the dist in.
Just a suggestion. Make sure you can install and remove your distributor without having to move the engine forward, etc. Also, make sure you have your steering figured out as well as your pedals before you do any "final" welding. Mike
may want to see where this puts your fan in relation to the radiator (if you are running a fan off the engine).
Thanks guys for the input. As of now, my main question is the height of the motor. I think it will be going back about an inch or two and no, it is not quite level in the pics.
To me I've always like em a little higher, at least where the carbs clear the top of the cowl. I never have liked a motor down low with all that firewall showing, it always looks like the motor is about to fall out. I'd go maybe about 2-3" higher, but that's my personal taste. Whatever you do It'll look cool!!!
What are your plans for the firewall? Are you running a W/B OF 103.5". I stayed with the stock W/B because I like the stubby look. Another pic of mine.
Let me guess... only two bolts b/c that top front one doesn't line up. Am I right? I am using the same mounts and i have to ream the front hole on both sides to get the third bolt in. I should have just made some from scratch. BTW, you're beating me now, but I'm going to paint my engine tonight and hopefully have the drivetrain back in and AND put the body on this weekend. Looks good. Keep it up! - Matt
In terms of cooling, I used (2) 90 degree bronze El's to form the lower coolant hose pipe. Put in a short length of ~1.5(?) inch dia. Cu tube, pivot one El against the other until they line up w/the pump and radiator connections. Then swett them together and join w/two straight pieces of hose.
speedway said they have addressed that issue......send them back and they will swap them out......or at least that was what i was told at the hot rod and resto show at indy...or you can just get the file out.... anyway....i like to raise my motor up enough so that pan is not the lowest part on the car....i also do the same with the steering box.....call it cheap insurance..... brandon
I set my motor somewhat lower than yours - similar to royal shifter's. This left more floor and leg room, but brought the mechanical radiator fan too low. We raised the mechanical fan by installing a water pump riser from Pete and Jakes. These use chevy in line six cylinder water pumps. It works good now. By the way, I agree with the hambers - install the distributor so that the cap can be removed without having to move the engine. Good point.
Nate, What is the law in Ca.? Can the carbs come out of the hood , or can you run with out a hood ? If so looks good
