Sled, not sure exactly what you need, but here are some pics of the left side of my 49. It looks like you need to lengthen your B post down the inner rocker instead of stopping at the top. Outer quarter conforms to the B post and wraps under the inner rocker. I tried to rebuild mine as close to original as possible. I have more pics of this area. If these do not help, let me know and I will try to find some that will. Ken

    G´day Sled
I tell you, my small finger still hurts were I hit it with the hammer making those support boxes on the cowl.
But the best part is the Tequila at night and rockabilly music.
    I just love the car.

Im doing the same thing right now on my 51 coupe, I dont have any measurements with me but I did cut everything out so I can replicate it close later.

You will have to extend down the b pillar as said, there are two small upward tabs that mount to the inside surfaces (facing the door) of the a and b pillars. The b pillar then tapers down and the rockers also weld up to that.

The bottom of my a and b pillars (surprise surprise) are junk and I have to redo them.

Mid-Century-criser, thanx a lot for the pix...they help for sure!!need some more pix on the base on the B pillar from different angles and most important the exct measurement from the top of the B pillar /where the 3/4 panel is bolted to, to the bottom of the B pillar...

i notice the B pillar stops a bit above the bottom rocker, how much is measures there ? half inch,3/4 inches or???

i have pretty much clear the idea now, wanna just be sure to go correct with the m,easurements and start lenghten the B pillar tomorrow mornin right away...

    Ken, really appreciate your help...

Btw,your Merc looks killer too...do you plan to chop it soon or ???

is so cool to have Hamb fellas helpin each other,no matter what...

    priceless shit!!!

Unionvillehaunt, thanx for the infos too... if Ken sends me some more pix and measurements i'm pretty much done with this side, can keep going quick ...
also plan to start tomorrow the rockers from scratch too...
but also i will redo totally the A pillar, not happy with the original one...will be in the trash soon.
more/less i feel the 70% of the original metal will be history once the car is finished....will be no longer swiss cheese anymore!

Sled, here's another pic of the B post. Measuring from the top of the upper quarter to the bottom of the B post is 32 inches. Also measuring from the top of the inner rocker to the bottom of the B post is 4 inches. I don't think the length is critical as long as it doesn't go down far enough to interfere with the (bolt-on) lower quarter panels fit. I used my lower quarter temporarily bolted on, along with the door closed to insure I got the correct curvature of the B post when fabricating my lower patch piece. Hope this helps and thanks for the good words about my Merc. It was almost as bad as yours when I started, but I agree with you, these coupes are worth saving no mater how bad they are. Maybe someday I'll get around to doing a progress post on my car. Let me know if you need anything else, Ken

Hey,you should start a thread on your Merc too...starts to look interestin at this stage..is the actual stage or you already chopped the thing??
what's your final plan or paint for the car???
Wich engine you like to put on???
i will stick with the 454 b. block taht was mounted on...not my favorite but it will a tire burner,to have some fun ..ya know!!
I skip the air ride on this one...perhaps in the next, wich will follow after this one...
hey, also i will bother you if you have a 45 degree angle pic of the lower A pillar from the door area lookin at the A pillar....just to see how you finished that part too...
cause i will replace the whole A pillar area up to the belt line,ya know...must be all new and shiny....
will be great buddy....thanx again in advance!!

Sled, here are some pics of the A pillar. Hope these help. My A pillar was only bad from just above the bottom hinge pocket down. I used three different pieces to repair this area just like from the factory. The inner piece curves under to form the bottom. The outer piece forms the recess for the lower door hinge. The front piece forms the 8 inch by 2 inch opening to access the hinge bolts. The top is already chopped, just needs a lot of finish out. I've got a sbc already built for it. I know I should have went with a flatty, but the moneys already spent. As far as the color I will probably run it in DP90 satin black for a while to make sure my bodywork holds up before I take the time to put a slick black or dark purple job on it. Again, just let me know if I can help. I have really enjoyed watching your progress since you are doing basically the same repairs that I am. Keep it coming Sled. I love this shit. Ken

    cool,i'm happy about...
    will startin the rockers too...
so,you're going with a sbc engine, kinda boring right??but hey ,is dependable...
yeah, looks like we're doing the same job here...
of course i will keep going on my Merc,no worries...will be showed to the end,and running...
also just received minutes ago from Us all the IFS a-arms and suspention stuff...still missin some parts but is going on...
Ken i got many Merc 49/53 flattie engines but the only problem we're too far away, not worth it to ship it to you..otherwise i could pass you one...
    thanx again,stay tuned

Just got an idea from this! Awesome, I was wondering how to recreate that contour by the 1/4 panel going into the inner rocker, make it out of 90s! Great idea Sled, this thread is like crack to me.

BTW...its lower 1/4 you are referring to? I keep reading 3/4 and getting confused... :)

Sled that A pillar looks great. I know what you mean about all the weird contours and angles very difficult to fab. Ken

Sled, I only fabbed from the top of the bottom hinge recess down on mine and that was hard enough for me. Ken
