does a stocker 194 have enough power to pull one of those?
got a 200R4 to go behind it...and how about the tv cable?
any ideas or anybody been there before?

    just throwin' an idea around..

It won't move you around FAST, but it will get the truck down the road!

The 194 is just a smaller sibling to the more popular 250 that powered many GM vehicles, including full sized pickups and vans well intos the 80s! No race engine, but a reliable powerplant!

If you use the 200R4 tranny, you will gain the advantage of a lower first gear ratio that will help get you going easier. The TV cable runs from the throttle linkage down to the transmission, and you will have to have it adjusted to obtain correct line pressure by a competent trans guy, but once set you can pretty much forget about it!

Hell, I've used a 194 six popper in the past...a buddy pulled one out of his old Chevy II to make room for a 327 and gave it to me along with the stock Powerglide. I put it into a 4x4 Camaro (Blazer chassis) of all things! Only drove that abortion once or twice...but it DID keep up with traffic...barely!

You should be okay...the overdrive tranny and lack of huge 4x4 tires and axles will mean that your truck will be able to motor along easily enough...not gonna win any races...but you'll drive it for many miles of trouble-free cruising!

(Stay tuned to this channel to see how a stock Vega FOUR CYLINDER moves a lightened up 49 Chevy Fleetline later this Summer...I'm expecting 25mpg in a car that is at least no SLOWER than my Metro!)

I wish we could pay that much for fuel, over here its about $6.40 now. [IMG] [IMG]

The GMC has a lot longer engine bay so you will have no problem fitting it.

I once replaced the OHC Pontiac 6, in a friend's Tempest, with a 194 with PG out of an old Chevy II. It was underpowered, to say the least. The mileage wasn't that good, either, as the engine was always working hard. The 200 may help but I would opt for a 250 for the extra torque. How much does a 47-53 GMC weigh? The Tempest was about 3000 lbs and very aero compared to the GMC!

The Advanced Design Chevy trucks (47-53) weigh about 4800lbs.
    Go for the 250.
    That's what I am doing.
you'll need to build a front motor mount or add to the frame to use the side mounts.
    Rather simple.

    well, i don't have a 250 and iffn i was gonna buy one, i'd find a 292...

oh well, i've got a good(?) 305 sittin' here or i could use one of the 4.3's....

i find it WAY hard to believe that the gmc would weigh 4800 lbs....loaded maybe..

Yeah, 4800 pounds sounds a little heavy!

My 49 Fleetline weighs 3000 stock, and will be more like 2750 or so when it hits the road. It's a BIG car, but it's pretty light...and get's lighter all the time...as me and Mother Nature take more Frivilous" metal and stuff away!

That dopey Camaro/Blazer I built with the 194 moved okay, but it was probably no more than 3200 pounds, either. It had 3.55 gears out back turning 33" tires through a Powerglide! It wasn't FAST, but it was on par with maybe a four cylinder Escort wagon...you could DRIVE it, anyway!

Go ahead with the swap and see how it works, since you already have the engine. If it's not to your liking, a 250 or 292 will bolt in where you mounted the 194...can't hurt to give the "littel" six a shot, though!

(Hell, 194 sounds HUGE to me...I'm runnin' a 140!!! [IMG] [IMG])

Believe me I don't think there is a cooler engine than an hopped in-line in the right vehicles.
But I have one of these trucks and I haven't seen an in-line that has enough power to satisfy my appetite for torque and acceleration.
I wouldn't put one in these oversized, top heavy vehicles. But thats just my opinion mind you.

  10. If you add a header and a 4 barrel, I bet the performance would suprise you. I'm puttin a 250 with the same setup in my wifes 50 Chev truck. It has a Muncie behind it, it should go pretty good. My buddy has a 194 in his 54, and it goes alright, but nothin like a V8. Run the six, you will dig it.

i've got one still in my 62 chevy 2 wagon with the powerglide. drove it ten hours to the atomic rockabilly rumble back in april. only used 1 qt of oil there and back. the only thing i did when i got it was to put a 3.08 rearend in it. but that was to get the the 5 wheels. heading up to bowling green in a few weeks in it also for the nostalgia drags. with gas prices headed the way they are going i'm glad i kept the 194. alright i'll shut up.
