i have a 80% duty cycle, 220v mig welder that i have been using for awhile...its has the star gold gas, anyway i seem to get great penetration but the welds look less than impressive,i have tried wire speed up and down, the welds still look like caulking gun welds, its spot welds great... iam bound to get this right, it would be nice to weld prep and paint and go...i know it takes years of doing...
I think its more technique then the welder. Not to ultimately say the problem is you, but maybe try moving a little slower on your beads.
i have tried to move slower, back and forth, its like everything is happening in the weld pool so fast it just doesnt give me any time, to get the weld to build up to get that roll of nickels look, that i have seen many people do...
does this welder have heat control and wire feed control sounds like to much heat and my have the polarity wrong what side is you ground on pos or neg when useing gas mig welding grond should be neg side and is it mig wire chalking could be flux core or arc wire start with the basics check these things first, what is your gas flow set at 15 pounds should be cool .check gas flow to the tip
Push or pull the welds? Push gives a pretty weld with less penetration, pull better penetration with lesser looks
Sounds like someone just doesn't know what they are doing. Hard to teach someone to weld over the internet. Find someone who knows how to weld in your area or go to school. Sounds like you are going to fast and don't have your voltage high enough. What size wire are you using? Is your metal good and clean? Your welder should have settings on it somewhere to tell you what to set it on. Do you have an owners manual?
hey bill, i have been a welder for 15 years. i`m not saying i`m the best one around but, i could come by and maybe show you a few things sometime if you want..
its set up for dc reverse polarity, their is a jumper that lets you set it either way....my flow is at 20# its not flux core wire, what i ment by chaulking gun welds is that the welds look like when you lay a bead of caulk down, smooth but good penatration
you are right if i knew how to do it i wouldnt be needing the advice...i have a chart for the settings,i have played with the heat/and speed...
evey mig ive owned worked with the ground clamp while mig welding is neg side if its no it will work like **** but it will work
it will work but it will work like **** , but you unit could be diffent can you do both arc with flux core and mig with it
its has the ground clamp, but their is a jumper that lets the ground polairty be change from + or - iam not sure what that is....
its for mig only, it says it can do alum, as well that may have something to do with the poliarty.i dont know...
try pushing the weld if you are already pulling it torwards you, also best tip I ever got "never out run your puddle" and always test weld on a similar s**** piece , you don't want to set your spped/heat on what is to be your finished work. also I believe that "goldstar" series gas is for extremely clean metal welding, I had a bottle and was warned off of it to a standard argon/co2 mix for common steel. as stated before, make sure your tip is clean to allow proper gas shielding.
HIJACK!!!! Do you guys use the nozzle-gels they sell for tips on your mig guns. Does that stuff work??
Yeh i use nozzle ****, works great and a little tub lasts about seven years! I actually think this guy is looking at Tig welds and Going 'how come i cant do that with my mig?' theres nothing wrong with a smooth appearing Mig bead, you can make it look more 'stack o dimes' if you flick back into the trailing edge of the pool and forward again in a regular motion, but its not needed. argon/co2 mix is best .
iam talking about mig welds i know this guy that can lay down a mig bead that has perfect penetration and looks like a machine did it...
Id be talking to him then.. real world experience will trump internet knowledge everytime.. he no doubt does it for a job, and will help you out no end if you show interest in learning from him!
i will be talking to him soon. the welds look like these they have good penetration, i just think they could look better...
It's all in your technique, I have a friend that can make a bead with a stick welder that looks almost as good as a heli-arc welder as far the roll if nickels look your looking for (he as also one of the best heli-arc welders I've ever seen), try moving the gun in a crescent type pattern while putting a bead down.
1st how thick of metal? 2nd try making little "e" s 3rd rhythm moving over about a 8th, then slightly overlapping the weld.
