So I am no motor wizard and my spare time is less than desirable at the moment. I recently got a pretty nice '64 Studebaker Champ pickup that has a 259 V8 in it. It runs pretty decently, maybe with a slight miss but not bad actually. However, it spits quite a bit of water and carbon out the tailpipe. Not sure what that is all about. I am thinking it might have a head gasket leak (hopefully not a cracked block). But, I just don't have the time at the moment to dig into the engine and then spend months with my lame skills trying to get it back together and running again. I was wondering if anybody could recommend a good motor wizard in the area and one that won't tell me to take a hike when they find out it is a Studebaker. I know where to get any and all parts as might be needed. It is very driveable, so I can take it somewhere or they can come to my shop and maybe we could even work on it together so I could learn something in the process. But, my main goal is to let some one who really knows what they are doing go through it and get it running as good as can be asap - basically a good solid performance tune-up and figure out the water/carbon tailpipe thing. Willing to pay of course. Feel free to send me a PM if you know of anyone or might be into it yourself. I looked in the h.a.m.b. O'Dex, but didn't see anything that might be helpful. Thanks!
No, never heard of them, but wouldn't mind if appropriate. Do you know them or just of them? Introduction? Seems like they might be good to know regardless. Thanks!
bump anybody? if you are into doing it at my space here in Berkeley, I have the tools and pizza and beer on me too along with $ or how about even just a recommendation on a shop that will actually work on it and do a good job? thanks!
I live in SF and could come by this coming weekend and help you figure out what's wrong with it. Ill bring my compression tester
Might have someone that could help you out. His name is Larry and he works on a private collection(20's and 30's vehicles) for the owner of Piedmont Piano at a shop in Emeryville. When he is not working on those cars he will works of others at the shop. I have taken my 48 Plymouth to him when I could not figure out the problem myself. Good rates and let me work on it with him. PM me if you want his # or have any questions. I believe he lives in Berkeley and may be willing to come to your house. Seems pretty flexible.
