I went and picked up a new rear end Saturday from Slide. Thanks Mike!

It is a chevy 10 bolt that I believe is out of a early 70's nova.

How do I tell what this came out of?

Are there numbers on it that will identify it?

Also on the way home I lost one of the drums it bounced right off of the rearend and off of the trailer.

Are most Chevy rear drums the same?

What year drums will fit this if I can't find one from the same year range?

    Any help would be great.

I take it that it doesn't have drums on it.

If it has shoes left measure across both shoes (< >) Outside and then measure the width of the shoe. armed with that you should be able to tell what you have. A 70 Nova should have 9-1/2 dia. by 2 inch wide rear shoes and or rear drums.

Here is the info that should help you figure it out.

Ok. So I got the code off of the rearend. It is 2FB0271. It was located on the front side od the p***enger axle tube. I can't seem to find it anywhere. I looked at the above site and didn't find anything. I might just be blind though:D Does someone know what this is??

  9. You should be able to identify it by those perches which to me look old.Maybe 66-67 Nova....

  10. All Nova's & Camarro's with that axle would have the large pocket style perches for the rubber cushioned spring it would have four studs and a plate that held the spring in instead of U bolts. That axle is out of a S-10 pick up. That is why it has the regular style spring mounts. All the S-10 axles were under sprung. As for a year i would say mid to late 80's. If you measure the brake shoe width you can figure parts for it as they were all the same from year to year with brakes being the major change.

    Hope this helps?

  11. Found this...The rear axle ratio may be determined by finding the two- or three-letter serial number prefix in the following table. The 1962-63 serial numbers are located on the front, right side of the differential carrier. The 1964 serial numbers are found on the bottom of the carrier. The 1965-79 numbers are usually found on the front of the p***enger side axle tube.

I don't know what this rear came out of but it was a car with coil springs. You can find gear ratio by blocking one axle so it can't turn. Then rotate the free one two turns and count how many times the drive shaft turns. If you turn your axle two turns and shaft turns two and 3/4 times you have a 2.73 . -2and 1/4 times 2.23. You can also take the rear cover off and count the teeth on both ring gear and pinion. Devide pinion # into ring gear # and you will hane ratio. It doesn't matter what it came from as long as you can use it. If you need parts for it take your old part to any NAPA or CAR QUEST and they can match them. If they can't go to another parts store that knows what they are doing.
