Had batt. cables on solenoid backwards fixed that unhooked white wire going to key switch and attached to push button. button acts as ground for solenoid and low and behold engine starts.

Great news!! Glad you're on the right track now. You'll never forget that some solenoids are grounding types and others are hot wire types. How do you think I learned? :)
Now you're going to be a wiring genius before ya know it.

does anyone know if he can get that ignition switch to through out a ground to the solenoid, so he can start it by the switch instead of a button.... or was all old cars wired with a start "button"?

If you can find a 6V relay that activates when voltage is applied (grounded internally), then you can use the key switch to apply voltage to the additional relay. One switched terminal of the second relay would connect to the small starter solenoid terminal with the other switched terminal going to a ground.

When you turn the key to the start position , it would energize the second relay completing the ground circuit for the original starter solenoid just like you pressed the starter button.

I'm sorry I can't help you with a 6V solenoid that works that way. A 6V horn relay wouldn't work.

I am going to take a stab at this question.
The all in one switches normally were all internally wired to run the hot wire to the solenoid instead of grounding. There may be a few odd ball switches like that. Most of the types I have seen that required grounding had a push button. You have to match the solenoid to the switch. If you want to run the starter off the ignition switch then buy a solenoid the activates with a hot wire. Maybe someone knows of an oddball switch that allows this...

That's just one of the cool things about an old car that I enjoy. All of my old cars have starter buttons.

If the truck was positive ground wouldn't it be doing that anyway?
