another early ford brake question. "needin advice."

right now i have 'nice' inside & out 48 ford backing plates blasted skimmed out & primered awaiting paint with all the hardware already blasted & painted, - nice original wheel cylinders (id hone & new rubbers) , - 4 decent shoes, -- this can all go on soon & im done. & i would probably spend another 100 on new shoes if i keep these as i will drive this alot. i need new hoses reguardless.

OR i can update to new 39 lincoln loaded backing plates 2" wide brakes with self adjusters. new everything looks like 400.00 is the going rate. & another 60 bucks gets me finned aluminum backing plates so 400 or 460.00 + needing hoses.

sell my 48 brakes for ?? & buy new lincoln brakes & have a another couple hundred in the brakes. ---- i like the looks of 48 backing plates the best but this is full fendered & low 34 pickup so im the only one that would look underneath anyway.

what are the pros & cons? this is a matter of a couple hundred bucks. i have alot of time in the 48s so id want top dollar & i have a guy begging for them already. - what to do?

 

Really depends on your budget and likes. What you said about it being full fendered and low tells me your the only one that going to pay much attention to that, except for those that are interested and actually come out and ask you what your running.

For me I'd go with the 48 Brakes and keep the cost down, maybe put it into to something that gets viewed from the rest of the world.

 

I sold a nice pair of '48 front barkes not long ago for upwards of $200. I'd sell them if I were you & buy the self-energizing Lincoln style brakes.

Save $$ somewhere other than on the brakes.

Y'know- you might try a local clutch/brake lining shop. That's what I did for my '47 shoes, Caspar Brake & Clutch in KC, I think it was $11 a shoe. Walked in with my cores and he had 'em in stock.

 

The Lincolns will stop her a lot faster.

Go the lincolns, but be aware that to retain the two inch wide shoes you need the lincoln drums and hubs too i think, or does the 400 include all that? nah it cant. maybe you can grind the lincolns down to 1 3/4" ? not sure.

 

Use the 1 3/4" shoes. It'll stop on a dime.

To be honest, I bet you can get 400.00 for your stuff on Ebay. Drums go for about 100.00 a piece if there nice, and you should be able to get 200.00 for the set of backing plates if there cleaned up with usable inards. I sell early Ford brakes all the time on there...

alright this is just what i wanted to hear. thanks.
i didnt mention i would be using some buick drums (since ive got em) ill use some. - so then would 2" shoes be the ticket?

i took & split the 34 bone, bought bungs & tie rod ends from speedway, drilled a mess of holes in the bones from big to smaller & welded pipes in & smoothed everything out so i should have a really neat front end. 4" dropped I beam, everything painted "nice" everything 2-toned a couple neutral subtle colors. thats why i like ford backing plates you can 2-tone em. - 40 spindles, & i drew up some wings to cut out to mount the bones to off the frame.
i had to buy a 'whole "total POS" (a terrible looking car) a 48 ford coupe to get front hubs. but all this will be neat but kinda covered by fenders. i might have to pull the grill apron off so i can see it. naaaaaaa.

 

Damn, I was trying to give those old Ford brakes away a couple years ago and no one wanted them. Guess I need to dig some out and clean them up for swap meet bait...
