The current project! fired it up and now I have to tune on my V8 oil pump, I put in a new 50 lb. spring but the engine has 60 lb. at Idle. Trying to find accurate info on spring rate. On my first one a few years back I spaced the cap out .187 and when that didn't work I cut 3 coils from the spring, I guess I can calculate from that but maybe some one can give me a rate per coil. There was an earlier post regarding oversize valves. in this engine I have 1 3/4" Manley SS sbc valves cut down from 2.00". I'm sure that one could find them but I had the 4 valves They were also .200 short so I made some longer adj. screws for my single lock lifters. I measured stock "A" ports at the valve seat at 1.340 average which would give 1.410 area opening. I opened the block at that point to 1.562 which gives an area of 1.916 under the valve. I have an uriginal winfield head that would clear 2" valves but most heads are crowding it with 1 3/4, I opened the intake pocket's in this head slightly.
Glad to hear you like her. It's been a super fun project. I'm trying to built it the way a high school kid would have in the late 40's. The stance comes from a 4" dropped axle, and a reverse eye de-arched front spring. The rear is simply the original spring reversed eyed, with 4 leaves removed. The front tires are 650 X 16 and the rears are 750 X 16. The body and frame are all original. I was lucky enough to find a rust free car, as my first Hot Rod project. It came from a fellow down in Oklahoma that passed away like 25 years ago, and it was stored in a heated garage since. Here are a few more pictures for you. Let me know if you have anymore questions. Thats a bitchin car! I am doing similar things to my 30 coupe, the build should be a lot like yours. I have an orriginal car that I am lowering with a 4" dropped axle and a reverse eyed spring, in the back I was gonna run a T spring, should lower it about 1 1/2". I too am running 7.50 in the rear, but 5.50 up front. I REALLY like how your car sits, so I am glad to see were running similar set ups. I also have a dropped headlight bar with some guides!!! The only thing different is I'm keeping the 30 grill, yours looks killer with the duece!! I do have a set of pretty nice (but not too nice) 32 bumbers I'm gonna run. That really is one the of the coolest sedans I have seen! I love orriginal paint cars
That tudor is awesome What I like about Model A's is that you can have them as simple or as complex as you wish. There was a neat restored 29 tudor for sale here that was waiting to be "rodded" the HAMB or HOP UP way
nothing exciting for me on the 4 banger front except i finally found a new picture of Duke Hallock's car aside from the article in R&C this pic from Al Drake's FLAT OUT was all i had but then i found this in Hot Rod in 1962!! looks like the body lines are painted a different color? anyone know what model carbs these are? anyone have any more???
yeah!, i wasnt too sure on how "heavy" it was since you couldnt really tell it was even there in any other pictures still looks like a stock type hood, i wonder if it was chrome plated and then turned into the plating? almost looks like the wheels and body lines are the same shade of a color...red blue etc notice the V8 hubcaps with the Cragar motor and the fact that it only runs one hoodside i bet they replaced that and swapped to different exhaust when not running at the lakes.... i wish i could find a picture with the windsheild on

Doug, I think that is the Hall-Scott aero engined Mercedes race car that has been at Hershey for the last few years. Duesenberg walking beam engines used side valves like that so did a few others. I'll look for a cutaway illistration and post it when I do.
There is such a thing as "brushed" chrome. I believe Model 'A's had this from the factory on the gear sticks and handbrakes. I still think it could be "brushed" nickel. Another finish used on factory 'A's. Not sure if it is a stock bonnet. I can't see a centre hinge but I can't not see one either.
probably is so shiney cause the sun is right on it. but it would be neat to know how to "burnish" chrome
Nothing much new here except I just got back from CA on a trip. While there my wife and I had the pleasure of meeting our club's last original member who's still around at the young age of 90! I was blessed to recieve some photos and some copies of photos of his car, etc. My plans have now shifted for the roadster, after spending a day with him talking for hours on end, and seeing the photos of his roadster back in 1940 our friendship has only grown stronger and we are now like family,...heck, he's almost like grandpa #3 to me! HA! We both wished I had been this age back in his time, what a pal, a good man and kindred spirit! I'm looking to switch bodies from my '27 T roadster to a '28 body on my A chassis,...I feel moved to do so, to pay homage to him and the others in the club from the early days of hot rodding. If all goes well, to make a trek, cross country to share it with him,...the same kind of 4 banger powered '28 roadster he built and raced in his youth! I just want to give him a great big grin and a few tears to go with it, to see him light up like a teenager! So keep yer fingers crossed and your mitts folded in prayer for me, 'cause I'm putting this goal on the horizon to meet it by spring,...Lord willin'. (funny note, he said he wore the same thin moustace I'm now sporting when he was my age building his first roadster!,....) Oh yeah and we're still making slow headway in building the banger,...the goal is by the end of Feb,....sure would be a nice Birthday present to have this month!!! Update on oil pump pressure. We pulled the pump and it had a "new" 50 lb. spring from C W Moss. 2" long, 17 coils, wire dia. .046. I had 2 others on the bench, both used, 1 was 1 7/8" long, the other was 1 3/4 " long, the wire size on both was .045 the shorter one had been cut, so I rigged up a sleeve that pressed over the outlet and tapped it for 1/8 " pipe and hooked it up to a gauge. I then filled a coffee can 1/3 full of engine oil and set it up in the Bridgeport which I ran in the back gears and reversed. At 60 RPM's it produced 50 lb. pressure so I cut 2 more coils ending up with 14.5 coils and 1 5/8" so I reassembled my test. This time it pumped 30 lb. all the way from 60 to 500 RPM so we reinstalled and now it idles at 30 lb. This is at summer driving temp on the motometer. And no leaks, so far.
First time on this post for Bangers so I thought I'd drop a line with mine. I am in the midst of puttin this 28 back on the road. I posted a long ol story if you haven't seen it already (see link below). Egge machine in Long Beach, CA rebuilt (new babbit, surface the Windfield, etc)the motor back some 25 years ago. I've been workin on the car so I haven't spent much time updating my progress on HAMB. I need to take updated pictures and add on to my original post. I'll have to come back and ask some questions of you guys when I drop the motor and trans back into the frame. Currently, I am setting up hydraulic brakes. Brent, Great website! I noticed that in your racing "A"'s the cowl is well back from the original. I assume this involves moving the steering box. I have a 29 Speedster with the original cowl, but just the cowl. I have a rootlieb cowl in a box, and want to install it as you did, but am perplexed as to the steering. I have an F100 sterring box and if I try to move it back it will hit the starter. I though of moving it to the top of the frame, but that changes the steering geometry. It appears as though your cars have a longer steering column, and this would solve my problem, but I would still have to drop the wheel a couple of inches for comfortable driving. What did you use as a template for your firewall? It looks like metal in the pix of fabrication. I would post pictures of my car to this site, but I cannot seem to get them down to 117kb required for posting ( any help on this issue would be helpful as well). Thanks , Chuck Goings

Thanks so much for all of the compliments! I spend hours staring at it as well. I'm sure many would say I "over analyze" it too much. But that's the fun for me. Doing the research, looking at old photos, collecting parts and trying to make it look exactly like how I visualize it in my head. Thanks again... I'll keep you all posted on the progress.
