Is this a model A banjo? What year?

  1. Best bet is find a '40s banjo rear or a later Ford 9" ('50s-'60s) and throw some hairpins on it, done deal. Traditional, not too expensive, and looks great. Thats my $.02

  2. Keep looking. A 37-48 rear end is a much better choice and not all that hard to find. The only thing useable on the front is the axle and I agree it is not worth more than $50 after it is seperated from the other parts (a job) and confirmed to be serviceable. I buy and part out this kind of stuff. It is a crap shoot. I just pulled a primo rear gear set out of a 46-48 axle that was badly rusted up on the outside. But I have also opened up a rear with good, original paint on the outside and found gears so badly rusted they could not be used. I have picked up complete undercarrages for anything from free to $150. The stuff is out there.

  3. Early 32 rear axles have the spring mounted behind the axle- not on top like a Model A- same guts. The big thing about the strength of the axle is in the gas peddle and size of the tires. Can't do much about the gas peddle: but if you stick with the 5:50 to 6:50 wide tires you should have no problem in breaking stuff. You can build a great looking car with stock 19inch Model A wheels and tires.
PARTS IS PARTS! If you get it home, clean it up and decide you don't want it- swap meet! If you are like me you change your mind several times during a build and up with a big pile of left overs or a great place to start on your next project. That looks like a great pile to offer $25.00 and "I'll clean up that mess for you". Remember: parts is parts!
