I have 2 choices of power plants to use...the first is a 1969 390 FE that came out of a Cyclone GT....needs minor work just a freshen up, a flexplate and transmission. The second choice is a 351 Cleveland CJ out of a 1970 Mustang Mach 1 that needs rebuilt but I also have the transmission with it....Which would you use??
I'd vote 390 also. The last one I owned had 140,000 miles on it and sat for 5 years before I got it and ran like a new motor with absolutely no smoke, knocks, or noise. Best motor Ford ever produced if you ask me. What do you want to put it in? That might make a difference.
I have a 1951 for F1 pickup that one or the other will go into... Now for question #2...I have a bellhousing, clutch, pressure plate and flywheel for the 390 just no trans.....what trans will bolt up to the bellhousing? it is a stock bellhousing (1969)....and my truck does have a clutch pedal and linkage.....
The '69 Cyclone engine with the bellhousing will accept any standard Ford manual transmission from about 1964 through the late 70's. It is a standard Ford pattern. You should also be able to bolt up a Tremec 5 speed out of a mid-'01 to '04 Mustang GT.... same pattern transmission. That would give you overdrive. And I agree with the group on this one, run the 390.
Well looks like the 390 won this one hands down...LOL...so a tremic 5 spd will bolt up to my bellhousing? That would help with gas milage big time!!! HHMMMMM
I vote 390 as well. I just got done (yesterday!) rebuilding my first FE motor. There were some things that were different than building a Chevy, but it went pretty smoothly. The hardest part was getting the correct radiator hose!
Besides the early Hemi the Cleveland is my favorite! So I vote Cleveland in '08! The C has standard SBF bell pattern, the 390 has the FE pattern, different than SBF, or the 429/460.
I did a 390 for my Cobra kit car. They make a lot of TORQUE! Dress it up and tell everyone it's a 427!!!!!! Any toploader will fit.
