Hey all. This weekend past I installed a new Painless keyed ignition. One of the main ideas of installing this was to also install a ballast resitor byp*** wire because I have been having hard starting when the resistor gets hot. Anyway, my starter solenoid is mounted on the starter itself and doesn't have an additional post to wire the byp*** wire. Instead I ran an additional wire from the Start terminal on the back of the ignition to the pos side of the coil. With the new wire connected the motor starts then dies straight away. When I remove the wire, it runs fine! Any clues as to what I've done wrong? Cheers Adam F
Painless can send you a nice schematic. Also virtually any simple wiring diagram for "hot rods" has this.
You need two wires to the coil. One should be hot when the key is in run position, the other when in start. I would connect to the solenoid, starter side if there is no byp*** terminal.
Try leaving the wire on the coil the way you had it, but instead of having it attached to the "start" position on the switch, move it to the "ignition" post of the switch.
Dah, why not just change the ballast resistor as they have been using them since Adam plucked the apple. Maybe the one you have doesn't have the proper resistance. Or, simply replace your coil with an internally resisted one.
