...Ford V-8 flathead...I've owned and driven a few, but never built one,...got a few questions... 1. What year did the 24-stud block start? 2. Are even the early 24-stud motors considered 59A's? 3. Do 8BA Merc 4" stroke cranks fit 59A blocks? 4. If so, what rods & pistons do I use? I've got a bunch of parts, and an EXCELLENT early block, just trying to see what I need to do to build a decent little motor... Thanks...
1) 24 stud blocks first appeared in 1938 2) No, only 46-48 blocks are considered 59A blocks 3) 4" Merc cranks are not from an 8BA. They are from 8CM & EAC engines. Yes, you can use them in 59A blocks 4) There are many different type of rods to choose from, you can make just about anything work, but the stock late (49-53 from either a Ford or Merc) rod is the one to use as they are plentiful, the right journal size and have inserted bearings instead of full-floating bearings which are nice, but a ****** to get just right. As for pistons, you will need to use either stock Merc pistons or aftermarket pistons that are made for a 4" crank. Stock 3-3/4" crank pistons won't work. IMO...stick with the post war stuff. Either 59A blocks or 49-53 blocks. Please feel free to contact me anytime with questions or if you need parts. All I build are flatheads. Matt
