I have the chance to buy this 41' Lincoln Zephyr Coupe, but the owner will not give me a price. I don't want to piss him off with a insulting offer. He has a clue that it is not worthless (LOL). I've known of the car since 1988 when I first offered to buy it. He needs some money now so he is willing to deal. So what would be a fair price for it???? Someone put a ford flattie V8. needs grill and some trim. Floors are gone. The body is pretty solid. And NO I will not tell you where it is.........
Thanks, I was thinking of making a offer at $3,500, to leave a little wiggle room. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't to far off base.
Well neither one of us know what he will take at this point but if it is anywhere near $5,000 it needs to be taken home. I've got a feeling that $5,000 won't touch it but if he needs money you might have hit him at the right time. There just isn't hardly any of those around! Thanks, BOBBY FORD
Is it "What you see is What you get" ? It's hard to tell by those small photos what's there ? I'd say between 5K and 7K. Rob
I've never made an offer. The owner was dead set that it wasn't for sale. Would not talk about it..... Then the step son inherited it, he was sure he was going to "fix it some day". I offered to store it inside for him until he was ready to work on it, just to get it out of the weather. Out of the blue he calls and is ready to sell it with the 46 chevy 2d that a tree fell on, and a basket case 48 chevy truck. He said he wants a offer on all three. So I'm gonna buy all three, if possible.
Pretty much. It needs the grill, headlight trim, most of the side trim is there. Seat frames are there, the trunk floor is there, frame looks good. The drums have been sitting on the ground??
The sheet metal... how far gone is it? Is the body solid? Fenders? Metal under the decklid and between the front fenders? Bottoms of doors? That's where they like to rust out. How's it?
Bummer, I just sold a grille for a 41 - could have helped you out! But, ....be careful! These are unibody cars. You can't separate the body and frame without a great deal of agony. If the car is rusty underneath, you may get a lot more work than you bargained for!
Hmm I didn't know that. That sure is a rare car, hopefully he will be realistic about it and not want something out of this world. Keep us posted on what happens! -Dean
41 's I heard are more rare because of the tail lights. But they are nowhere as good looking as the 37-39 . they go from 8 - 15 k
41's have the good front brake backing plates that are not recessed. 600 to 800 there if in good shape. rears maybe 300 to 400.
I talked to him today, I'm going to meet with him Sunday afternoon. I tried to feel him out on the phone... but had no luck. But he still wants me to buy all three. UNI-body??? It look like it had a frame???
The Zephyrs had a frame.....extensively welded to the body! The body/frame structure is very strong, but the frame by itself is rather weak. When I converted my 37 to body on frame, I had to add a lot of steel to the frame to stiffen it up. If you get lucky and the car is solid underneath, it will save you a lot of time. Also, I have a 41 4 door parts car if you end up needing some stuff. Good luck with your negotiation!
Mate! the last thing I'd do is piss the guy off with a silly offer. He's being pretty good giving you first dibbs, play it your way, sensible and straight. I reckon you've got one shot at this, make it a good one. Don't let this turn to custard, if he puts this on Evil Bay your 5-7K offer will start looking real cheap real quick. If he advertises it for sale wordwide I'll be one of the guys you have to beat.
whats the car worth to you? thats what you need to figure out , i wouldnt try getting the car for wally world prices either he might just tell you to go piss up a rope and crush the car just for the hell of it.. good luck on whatever you decide ..
I think the $5K plus is more than fair. I've lost a few deals because I started too low. They then got other people involved and the price went way up. If the guy thinks, "wow, I'd didn't think I'd get that much", you'll have an instant deal. If he thinks your trying to screw him you're in trouble. My answer to "its a rare car" would be yes, it is, but it's also missing a lot of the rare pieces I need to restore it which are impossible to get. Play it like you are a restorer: no motor, ******, grille, etc. Just look at what an early '30s Lincoln is worth if it's missing its drivetrain, grille and other key pieces. A fraction of the value. Good luck. OT - Why the heck to people leave valuable rare stuff outside to get battered by the elements. I'd be worth a hell of a lot more if someone had pushed it into a barn or shed 20 years ago.
They want to leave it somewhere where people can see it and stop to ask if it is for sale so they can say NO. LOL
OK Kev, here's the Old Cars Price Guide figures from the April 2008 issue 1. $34,500 2. $24,150 3. $15,530 4. $6,900 5. $4,140 6. $1,380 Did Don tell you about the cars at Solgohachia being ALL GONE?
Just remember those prices are figured from one selling price via a mathmatical formula... I have a lot of cars I'd love to see bring the numbers in that book, but I know they never will. On the other hand, for once they're fairly close to what most people have posted. I'd ask the guy if he has a starting point before I threw a number at him, though, just in case he only thinks it's worth $1500 or something.
