I'm running an '88 Lincoln AOD behind my flathead. The '88 and later ones are supposed to be better. Lots of aftermarket stuff available. The throttle valve cable is the toughest part, adapting it to carburetors. (still working on that part, I'll keep you posted) You have to set them up with a pressue gauge to make sure your shift timing/pressure is correct. If it's not close you can really damage the trans. Baumann Engineering has a ton of info on their website. Flatman
See where TCI has the "Constant pressure valve" now for AOD also. I have an AOD in my 53 F100, took some playing before I discovered Lokar set up did not have enough spring. I added an additional spring and finally got it shifting correct. Next time i would use the TCI valve.
Thanks for the tips, may be getting an 80 351 w/an aod ****** behind it for a good deal and just wanted to see if anyone has had any hang ups with them
Just replaced my c-4 with an aod.did it for the overdrive, love it so far.have about 4k mi on it. I used the lokar cable kit, threw away their spring ,replaced with a normal spring to overcome to internal aod spring. Set up the tv with a pressure guage per the instructions. Should have no probs.I spent a lot of $$$ on hp clutches,A+ servo,Baumman shift kit, mech. diode, etc. but it works great. probably could get out cheaper with a late model aode and buy a $400 controller.Second the motion re Baumman web site. Good info, good service. Ron
I was planning on using a GENNIE shifter, it sounds like this can get a little pricey, i dont really need the overdrive , I was planning on a C4 or C6 this deal just fell in my lap with motor/trans....went to the Bauman website, seems a little confusing at first glance
I used a shifter from a '67 Mustang Measured the geometry of the trans shift arm and drilled the shifter arm where it matched. Had to fab my own linkage, but hey, we're on a budget! Flatman
Hey gang, thanks for all the help.. a buddy of mine also turned up this site which has a lot of AOD stuff www.transmissioncenter.org they have stock swap stuff and go fast goodies too...
Ford sold huge numbers of 351W/AOD Crown Vic Police Interceptors in the '80s. If there was a problem the cops wouldn't have made it the #1 cop car.
I just installed an AOD/HO302 in my Fairlane and got her on the road a couple of weeks ago. I'm diggin' it so far, but still don't have the AOD set up exactly like I want. I got a shop to do the final set on it (I have hte Lokar Linkage, too) but it's still not quite there. I'm interested in the posts above about replacing the Lokar spring with a stronger one. Which spring did yall replace? I've read about putting a helper spring on to make sure the TV linkage goes back into position quickly, but is there something else?
If you are getting the complete motor and trans from an 1980 van, you can use all the stock stuff including the carb. This means you don't need to worry about the aftermarket stuff. I had to rebuild one a couple years ago out of a 91 CrownVic ex-cuiser. It had about 130k on it and only went bad because the plastic bushing that keeps the TV cable on the carb linkage broke and lost all line pressure. (yes, 351 powered cruisers still had carbs then-a funky sliding venturi 2bbl). The first one I did and it worked very nicely-shifts etc. no reason not to run it. If you are going automatic, why not go OD.
If you take a van AOD & put it in a Crown Vic w/o any changes, the gear pattern is reversed! Park is drive.
