Just bought a 63 suburban with a converted floor shift three speed, maker unknown.
No way would it find any gear in any order selected!
Changed it to a Pep Boys generic shifter, exactly the same problem.
Cheap is not really cheap in the long run.
If something looks too good to be true, it usually is.

My floor shifter would always get bound up, so I put in a 5 speed.

I just installed a Hurst mystery shifter in my 49 Chevy this past fall. I was looking at the one at national Chevy but ran across this one on e-flea which was less money. If you have any questions or want pics let me know.

A good quality Hurst shifter works. It's worth the money, you can get it thru Summit Racing at a reasonable cost. Most of the others aare junk. Good Luck.

  11. I always called them mystery shifters, because it was a mystery if you ever hung a sweet speed shift.

As soon as you get a flat stick Hurst, you can really swap gears.
But get ready to swap tranny's also. Those old 3 speeds don't take to many hard gear swaps.

The broken parts can be mounted on a threaded rod for making a neat table lamp stand. When oil cans, were metal you could make your lamp shade from the can.

When something lets go in an old Chevy three speed
you also get to replace the case. The term grenaded
comes to mind. Been there, done that, several times actually, something about being young and doubting
that it could happen more than once. It can. Best shifter is a Hurst. Just take it easy.

  13. witch hurst,i have seen the one at my local parts store for a 3-speed in a chevy truck, will that work?????

I use a Hurst also. And I keep an extra tranny in the garage. They are cheap around here, (got my last one free) and easy to swap.

I have one that I'm not going to use if you want to buy it... It is a Mr Gasket.

  16. Just got one of those 3 speed Mr Gasket ones... can't tell if it sucks yet, I can't get the mounting plate they give you to work at all on a closed driveline 3 speed box!
