i thought about this a few times and wondered if it was possible. i have one dmv cleared 51 CA plate. we all know how pricey those get right! i was thinking of makeing a blank since there longer than the new ones. roll the lip on the edge with a bead roller.. then send it out to get the numbers stamped and voahlah! you got yer self 2 plates now..

  2. Unless plates are usable/unrestored or NOS my DMV (NorCa) won't accept them. I had this thought too.
If you could make an accurate duplicate and then weather it to match the other it might fly...Good luck.

you won't be able to tell the difference between a properly restored plate and an NOS one.

if you dont have a pair then get some single plates for cheap and weld them up so you have 2 with the numbers you want. of course you have to be able to make it undetectable on both the front and back

I remember something in the California law that says you need two plates "prison made" in serviceable condition. When I registered my 40 I turned in the modern plates the previous owner had and showed them my YOM plates, after a little scurry of activity and getting a supervisor involved the deal was done. My plates were originals that I round nailed to an old garage wall. I had mojo artworks restore them and they came out beautiful. I don't think DMV will approve rusty junk or plates the wrong colors.

FWIW at the Long Beach Swapmeet near the concessions there's a guy that makes plates for $25? $40? that look real nice, here's a photo of their work

  14. the problem is if you go into the dmv with 1 metal and 1 aluminum plate it looks fishy.

  15. By NOS I meant in original DMV packing as well, the girl at my DMV said no restored plates are acceptable, but you know how answers from people at the DMV go, different person-different answer. Ultimately they will end up taking a photocopy of the plates you want to use and filling out a form with a full description (size/colors/condition, etc.) and that all goes to some special department in Sac. to see if they accept them. This all being just my experience in CA obviously.

I was thinking about using a set of plates from the Platemeister for my 55 Ford, since my dad bought it new I still have the original 55 registration and was wanting to use that number. I would tell the ladies behind the counter they have been restored and probably get away with it but I need to know if anyone has used them too. Jeff

  17. My 36 plates were restored and the DMV looked them over, measured them for the proper size and that was about it. I bought them from a guy from Nor. Cal. at the L.B. swap. Fairly easy for me.

Isn't it crazy that any DMV would give a crap if they are "official" plates or not? If they are the correct color and use a registered plate number and current tabs, who would give a shit? I would be surprised if anybody ever got busted by the cops for using reproduction plates with the correct palte nubmer. Just leave the DMV out of it! ;)

  19. This is the guy you want...http://www.darrylsplates.com/index.html

Fifty bucks for a duplicate. I've got a set of '51's...one's nice, one's hammered...holes in it big enough to put your fist through. Cheaper to duplicate it that restore it.

Make sure to call DMV first to check if your plates are clear.

Darryls does perfect restorations . He takes forever ,,took them over 8 monthes to do mine . The duplicates , I was told , are plastic .

I did my YOM before I had the plates restored , the plates were hammered with holes and painted the wrong color with a brush. I had no problems . Some of the girls passed them aroud ,, being interested in how old they are ect... It all depends who you get at the counter . If you get a hassel , just go back another day . I do know people to have YOM'ed repops from tvplates .

It looks like you can now do a YOM with a black and yellow CA 63 plate , Thank the Governator Arnold

nice plates, but the size, shape, and letter/ numbers are all wrong for 51's. I got really lucky at and scored 4 sets of early matched 50's CA plates, and a pair of 37's that are still in their original DMV slip cover.

  22. Damn...they just confirmed this. I'd seen their restorations and assumed their dup's were metal. They won't touch my jacked-up plate either :(

why wont they mess with your plate??????

  24. One of 'em is in pretty good shape, just needs little rust cleanup and some paint. The other has a hole in it big enough that there's a letter missing...the lady who answered the phone at Darryl's sounded shocked when I told her about it, as if I punched the hole myself! When I explained that it was from rust, she said they couldn't handle a repair that size. She did suggest painting my white and blue plates black and yellow....haha!

I'm gonna see if I have better luck with mojoartworks....Dave, the dude who sells plates at Turlock, suggested 'em in lieu of Darrly's.

Are you guys serious? 1963 plates are legal now? That is sooo bitchen!!! I've got a set I've been saving forever.
    Let me know.

  27. not going to be legal till july 2009

  28. nope, dmv wont let you run rust, damaged, wrong material or the wrong color plates......they even questioned me about my '47 aluminum plates (which they ran steel and aluminum for a few years). also each dmv is different so try a few.....i finally after many years had a problem with the dmv, they didn't fill out thier paperwork properly and it took over 2 months to get my title and ok on the yom plates :(. also do they do damaged plates, i had a little garage door problem and my freshly restored '47 plate took a good hit.
