is your 390 front sump or rear sump?
you might be able to swap another oil pan and oil pump.

    Throwing some ideas out here....

Is your Comet front suspension similar to or the same as the early Mustangs? What about the Thunderbolt Fairlanes (I know Comet/Falcon are the same, maybe the Fairlane is similar)? Maybe you could check and see what they did in those cars to get the FE engine to fit. Wasn't it '67 or '68 when they started putting the 390 in the Mustangs?

Any room to move the engine ahead a little? I can only imagine how tight of a fit a 390 would be in a Comet.
Do you have any photos you can share with us? I'd be interested in seeing what you are up against.

Does it interfere too much to just notch the sump for clearance?

Guys used to either notch the pan or weld a piece of tubing thru the pan for the centerlink, which means to pull the motor the left the pan in the car.

Still the 6 cyl steering, or did you swap to V8 steering? If 6, you can re-ream the pitman and idler arm and swap the drag link to the bottom. The V8 steering mounts lower, and may clear the 390 pan in stock form. '65 V8 steering is the best to use, works best with Granada disc brake spindles, and I hope you are at least using those to stop that combo.

Man I really want to see some pics of this in progress and when it's done. As was said before, try mounting the center link under the arms and/or denting the pan.

the engine came out of a 70's f250 has same pan on it we are using the crites kit with the crites motor mounts and headers it has been in the car and does fit but its mighty tight the center link is the only issue i had the idea to move it the bottom by drilling out holes but we werent sure about the durability of drilling the hole out being the original hole is tapered?

u may want to see if there are any centerlinks that are dropped. Notching the pan is easy too.
