I went to the local paint store yesterday.
they have been in business all my life and only sell automotive paint.

The owner told me that its very hard to get rid of unwanted paint.
He had to pay $20,000 to get rid of the last batch of new unused unwanted paint
He said it was burned, wasted. I commented that I hate to see things go to waste. He feels the same way, but doesnt know what to do with colors that are mixed, then not wanted. He had a batch mixed for a business that changed colors and did not want the old colors.
He has DRUMS of unwanted paint right now

It seems to me that it could be used for heat or possibly fuel
What do you think should be done with it?

Why not advertise it here for local pick up if he can't ship it. And if he can ship, sell at a real cheap price so he can get rid of it and still make money with it. Why waste it if its still good and can be used? Hell, If the color was right , I'd buy some. The only downside might be the legal end cause it may be considered Haz. Mat making it hard to ship

I think that i'd be a great idea to post the stuff for us HAMBers or on Craig's List. You might be able to help him & make a few bucks on the deal.
    Where ya at?

I tried to paint my bicycle a few weeks ago, and it was going to cost 250 bucks, when I know it wouldn't be alot of paint at all. I didn't even give a damn about color, so maybe the guy could offer labor charges on top of a small fee for the paint? Have the "Mixed Haircut Special".

I've been told that you open the cans and let the paint dry out then you can throw it out. It's solvents that you can't dispose of. 55 gal drums might have different regs.

25 years ago they used to sell the bad mixes cheap. I wanted a tan like this but they kept giving me yellow. I went in the store and there was a gallon of muddy brown for like 15 bucks. I mixed it with the yellow and got this...exactly what I was looking for.:D With no code or factory name...my buddy called it "Turkey turd tan"

I'd be looking for somebody that's gonna put it in gallon cans on ebay for large amounts of profit, and rock bottom prices.

Why don't you become his paint outlet with a promise you won't target his existing customers. Just resell on ebay, HAMB, and other boards you hang out on.

Example, a while back Uncle Scoob hooked me up with a killer paint deal for my car trailer. Did I really care what color? Not particularly. I just wanted a quality product that would last longer than trailer paint, just didn't want to fork over $450 for decent materials. There's a lot of guys like me that would gladly pay 1/3-1/2 price for mismix.

If you've got lots of a specific color, might be worth looking for somebody with a beat up pole barn and try to make a deal.

    good luck

I had a similar experience in about '69 or '70 when the EPA possibly wasn't even around. I was browsing at a local auto paint supply store and they had a couple of huge tables set up with cans of mixed paint that for whatever reason had never been picked up. This place is one of the oldest car parts places in town and they have been supplying paint forever. They had dabbed a drop or two of the color on the lid of each can so you could get an idea of what you were buying. I picked up a quart can of Ditzler Alkylid enamel marked Jasper Green. I later found that it was used on Willys Aeros in 1953. I think I paid three or five bucks for it. I kept that paint in the ba*****t and over the years I would open it up once in a while and give it a stir to make sure it was still good. A few years ago I had the opportunity to pick up a set of KH 40 spokes for the 28 rpu that I've been working on. I had no doubt what color I would paint them. I took the can of Ditzler back to the store where I bought it and asked the counter guy if he had a compatible reducer for it. He was a younger guy and as he was looking the can over he says "My grandfaher mixed this paint". He could tell by his initials on the label. Here's how the paintjob turned out.

A private individual can't ship it... Hazardous cargo. At least they wouldn't let me ship paint.

You can't just specify ground only or pay hazardous freight charges?

Both the local paint jobbers I deal with on a regular basis have tables set up where you can buy the paint no one else wants.
Usually at 50% off and when my wholesale discount comes into play it's more like 75% off.
Most of it is top grade stuff like PPG Deltron etc.....

In Spokane, the local PPG dealer sells the mis-match or un-wanted cans for a discount. Stuffs good for practice if nothing else!

most paint shops here in memphis will give it to you if they know you. they usually have a shelf with several cans quarts/gallons sitting on it where they mis matched or the customer changed his mind.

I'd love to have it. I love to have an ***ortment of different colors on the shelf for that one off color you might want to mix on the spot. That and its nice to be in the middle of a job and be able to add something to the artwork on the spot.

Paint stores around here always have mismatched paint for sale/ give away. Great for painting shop equiptment, trailers, beater cars ect. You gotta be carefull if you want to paint something nice, most of it was mixed wrong, ok if the wrong toner was used but not if there was wrong binder or something. No warranties on s**** paint.
