Avoid getting mugged, lol. That should be first on the list. Other than that, where are you staying at? Greektown is always good (pizzapapalis is awesome, although I'm a huge fan of Louie's pizza up in Hazel Park). Henry Ford museum is cool if you've never been there. There's the new MGM casino if you're into gambling. I'll be working on my car if you want to come over and help, lol. Bryan
Do not miss the Henry Ford Museum or the Chrysler Museum; maybe get hooked up with Bob K and the GM tour (see sticky above). Budget a full day for the Ford, couple hours for the Chrysler. vic
THE POST BAR. Back when Race and I put the first show together in the ba*****t at Detroit, We started a tradition of TAKING OVER the "POST" bar next to COBO hall. Its a little hole of a saloon that you are incouraged to draw and write on ANYTHING! The pool table alone should be featured on a fri art show here. The first year a dozen of us partied there all night, last year they cramed close to 300 people in there. Shine, my fiance and I barely got in! Cheap whiskey and wall to wall Hot Rodders. Directions.. Walk out the front door of cobo hall, turn LEFT. go down to the FIRST street and turn LEFT again. Its about half a block down on the right. Hope to see a few of you there. Joshua Shaw
Friday or Saturday go to the Old Shillelagh 349 Monroe St. at the corner of Brush in Greektown. I'll probably be there Friday night. It's a great pound on the table sing along Irish pub. They've had the same house band forever and upstairs fills up fast. When I was there last month for the International Auto Show they were taking reservations and I almost didn't get in. For lunch go to the Detroiter at 655 Beaubien, right around the corner from the Shillelagh. They have an awesome 1/2 lb. burger with fries and a mug of beer for $7.99. It's the best deal downtown.
Ya gotta hit Miller's Bar in Dearborn when you do The Henry Ford Museum (Greenfield Village). It's omn Michigan Ave near Telegraph. Best damn burgers in Detroit & the place still works on the honor system for when you pay your check (cash only)! seeya in the ba*****t Larry
Don't know what your interests are but... I went to the Henry Ford Museum figuring I would spend the day and see cool cars, of course. But it was soooo much more. Like cool electric power plants, huge railroad engines, every household appliance and tool ever invented, and the actual Ford Tri-Motor airplane that Bird used to explore the arctic! Plus Bucky Fuller's Dome house and more. Then, I just had to stay over another day so I could see all of Greenfield Village. I can't overstate the feeling of standing in the Wright Brothers actual bicycle shop or Thomas Edison's actual lab - not replicas, the real thing! And the coolest thing was standing in the upstairs landing of one of the old houses in the village and looking out of the wavey windows and seeing a (then secret) GT 40 doing hot laps on the proving track just across a wall from "the past". You gotta go - and plan 2 days, at least.
Best Barbeque in town: Slow's Barbeque 2138 Michigan Ave Detroit, MI (313) 962-9828 Plus it has a great view of the old train station. If you know your way around town the abandoned Packard Plant is pretty cool to see. But you dont want to get lost anywhere near it or anywhere with in the city limits of Detroit for that matter.
Not too far of a drive to the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Museum in Auburn, Indiana... and THAT is DEFINITELY worth the trip!
You can easily spend an entire day in the Henry Ford Museum and still not see all of it. I have done it twice and loved it both times. You will see all manner of transportation to the largest and oldest locomotives to the rarest cares and even some airplanes, farm equipments and all sorts of Americana. I would do it again in a heartbeat. Same goes for Greenfield Village next to it. Talk about a time warp. I've not seen anything like it before any where else. A few years ago I went to the "Motorsports Hall of Fame" or something like that. It was a pretty good size museum, but out of the way and very quiet. Not many people. It was worth it though. Not sure if its still in operation. I seem to remember it was up toward Auburn Hills? Someone chime in here...
You have many good ideas already. Here is one more if you like karts. Check out kart2Kart.com. If you have some buds you might be able to race as a group.
I believe that was in the old Novi Expo Center which has moved to a new location down the street. Not sure if they took the "Museum" to the new location or not.
Yeah like billy said if you can get a guide, checking out the packard, the fischer body plant, the piquette and highland park t plants, and maybe driving by the kelsey hayes factory is pretty interesting. But this is all something not to be done in a nice rental car on your own.
Grow a beard cause you think it will get you laid in Canada for some reason, go to Canada, get drunk, Gamble all of your money away, pick up a pros***ute, have her cuss you out for not having any money... Then convince all you buddy's they need to grow beards and do the same the following year! I didn't do this... but another BSM member did. Long Live "DADDY" ...just an idea, JD
The Kopper kart build team will be sampling Detroit's finest beer at the A****er brewpub. No kiddin', they make the greatest beers there, we go at least twice every time we come to the Autorama! I can't wait for my favorite, the Vanilla Porter!
Kings Bookstore off of the M10 expressway @ Howard St, has a big selection of used carbooks & manuals. (5 stories of used books). BTW- I-75 south of Detroit will be SHUTDOWN at the end of the month & you'll have to detour around. That'll make it tough to get to Mexican Village for Margarits & Cervasas.
