I now have accidently become a Poncho collector. I picked up a really rotted out 55 Pontiac 2 door sedan. I'm heading the g***er nosebleed route with this one but I need sheet metal or fibergl*** parts to replace bondo. There is so much bondo in this thing that replacement metal would make it LIGHTER! I have a '54 and know some parts interchange with the 53-54 chevy and ***ume the same for the 55. Rockers: Inner/outers same on 55 Chevy and 55-57 Pontiac? Doors: Skins the same? Fibergl***? Do the doors interchange? Front clip: Will a 55 Chevy match up to Ponch doors/cowl (thinking of going 55 fibergalss flip) Trunk lid: Same? Anyone make 55 Pontiac hood & front fenders in 'gl***?
Doors interchange: Chevy 55-57 2 dr sed, club coupe, Handyman SW and Sed delivery, Pontiac 55-57 2 dr sed, Chieftain 2 dr station wagon. Trunk lids don't interchange without modification to the lock. Hollanders # for 55-57 Chevy is 406. 55 Pontiac Chieftain is 395 (55 Chieftain only), and Hollanders has a note that the Chevy deck lid will work if the lock is changed out. The 55 Star Chief is # 396, which is 55 Star Chief only. I would think rocker panels would interchange. I don't have any idea about the Chevy clip matching the Pontiac except the Pontiacs had a longer wheelbase, and the additional wheelbase was in the front fenders. The Pontiac had a 122" wheelbase to the Chevy 115". If you study pictures of the two, you'll see the lower fender on the Pontiac is longer from the door to the wheelwell. Sounds like a fun project.
If you have a Canadian Poncho, then you theoretically could bolt on a chevy front clip because the Canuck Pontiacs had the same wheelbase as the Chevy.
Rockers, doors and gl*** the same as the chevy. The chevy front clip will work on the Pontiac, I read somewhere that was a popular swap back in the day, 55 Pontiac with a chevy front clip. I don't know of any 'gl*** hood and fenders for a Poncho.
Gauder had it right about the canadian pont.,its basically a 55 chevy. the american pont is quite a bit diff. it is on a frame with the ft suspension, and brakes diff from a chevy. the master cyl is under the floor. i have a pont 55 2 dr sedan, all of the doors,gl*** ,rubber off a 55 chevy fit. i have a 350 eng in mine with a 350 trans and like it.
Cool so a pin on trunk lid is in the future as well as a set of fibergl*** doors. I found that 55 Chevy 2 door sedan outer rockers are the same as 55-7 2 door sedan pontiacs. inner rockers are different. Poncho (American) frame is a perimeter frame and an X frame combined, and wider than a Chevy (ladder)frame. Chevy frame is also the Canadian Pontiac frame. The 55 front clip will mate up to the cowl and doors but the wheels will be 7" forward in the wheel wells, but since I'm going to stub the frame and straight axle it I could shorten the wheelbase by 7" and use a 55 chevy front end or a set of 55 Canadian Pontiac fenders. Alot of good info out there. The search function revealed some neat pics too notice how they are all Canadian Ponchos??????
Actually the 56 is a USA car.The easiest way to tell(if you can't measure the wheelbase)is the shape of the front wheel wells. The USA versions are rounded in shape whereas the Canadian version is flat across the top edge.
I wsh youluck trying to find real nice 55-6 Canadian Pontiac front fenders. 99.5% of them have the headlights rusted right off them. That being said, I might have a set of fixeable one that are better than most... I would consider a 55 Chevy flip front.
