How about them Dodges! Nobody and I mean Nobody picked any of them to win. The Toyotas have about 30 HP over everybody. Glad the Rice teams did not win The Great American race

I used to watch it alot when I was a kid, and off and on while an adult. Just aint the same with out Ol' Dale out there being the Intimidator.
And now with all these new "car of tomorrow" cookie cutters..its just getting too far away from what it was.
besides ive got better things to do

You have to look at the bright side of Nascar. The cars are still very close to Hot Rod roots- front engine/rear drive V-8 powered, a carb on top of the engine, a four speed ******, Chevy truck arm rear suspension and a Ford 9" rear end. The ch***is are welded steel that are alot like what we build as Hot Rods. They still have a conventional steering box instead of a rack. At least they aren't built out of some exotic materials like Formula One cars or Cart cars are. I hear alot of moaning how they aren't "stock" cars anymore, but would you really like to see a bunch of front drive V-6 powered, electronic fuel injected computer controlled Chevy's,Fords,Dodges and Toyotas running around a track? That sounds too much like "ricers" to me.

I'm with Drive Em on this. I went to my first Nascar race in '52 in Macon, GA on the 1/2 mile dirt oval @ Central City Park. Went to the first race at AMS, and almost every one since. Still have a reserved infield parking slot right next to the fence in turn 3/4. I'll be there in March.
I do like dirt better, and short tracks have more action, but hell, racing is racing.
And the technology is something we can understand, rather than the voodoo stuff done in other big league racing.
New issue Hot Rod Mag. has article on the newest Chevy engine, IIRC, LB7. This pushrod engine produces in excess of 800hp, at rpms up to 9500 and does it for approx 800 miles (practice, time trials and race combined), to me, that's fantastic.

  9. If Sr. had been racing for the win rather than blocking for HIS team he'd still be alive today.. Why would an owner hire a driver who owns a competing team? Talk about a cl***ic conflict of interest. I was a Nascar fan since the 50's but that episode finished it for me. Just a bunch of good old millionaires carving up the sponsor's pie. You know it's been sanitized when car insurance companies get involved. Wait until the next fatalities and they'll be gone. On a positive note it was nice to see the Dodge Boys steal the show.

It's been a painful process watching NASCAR neuter the sport. I'm sure it still takes balls to climb in one of those things but the size has got to be dimished since the days of old.
I sure liked seeing all of the oldtimers during the pre-race show and the rerun of some of the pit fights that were part and parcel of the roots, when men were men,................... oh well.:(
Sure hope Tony wins one soon so he can cut that ladies hairdo off and get back to just looking like a grub that can't afford razor blades.

I think I'll go over to a NASCAR board and post something about traditional hot rods!

    NASCAR died with Dale.

It's just not the same sport that it used to be. I really liked the beginning of the TV coverage yesterday though with the vintage race clips and such. I guess personally and locally the changes in NASCAR over the past 5 years have lead to a resurgence in the gr*** roots racing in my area. The local homegrown dirt tracks and Saturday night specials have really seen a growth in attendence over the past year and I imagine will see even more this year. You know the old addage, nothing lasts forever! :D

I'm thinking about a Roller Derby ****ogy. Teams with Jammers and Blockers. The Hendricks City Bombers. Jeff Gordon could play for the Powder Puff Division.

  16. I met Ryan Newman and his mom, dad, and sister in '93 when he was competing for the NAMARS Michigan dirt ***le which he won at age 15. Ran into them again that summer at the Hoosier Hundred.....NICE folks.

I have mixed emotions about Sunday's finish. Glad Ryan won it....not a big fan of Penske. :(

I don't think racing should be a team sport although I totally loved it that DODGE kicked booty(even though they are dodge in name only).
