I want to know who was turned around to look... I doubt anyone was, and just like in any other situation it probably happened fast enough for no one to be able to put it all together... Anyway you slice it it ****s...
IT is a terrible tragedy plenty of blame to go around. However i have been guilty of the same thing. Hell i have even raced my own sons on the street. lucky no bad outcomes. still it was stupid but fun OldWolf
What a load of self rightous horse**** Bob. Blood isn't even dry there and here you are coming off like some talk radio personality. What a ****ing stupid statement! This was a tragedy. And another tragedy is your calousness. Maybe you'll want to try to beat me up after I get well, but I'm calling ******** on you. Stupid statement, shame on you.
Hmmm, multiple, everlasting threads dedicated to our favorite movies; American Graffiti, Two Lane Blacktop, etc... But when something like this happens everybody has a high horse to ride. Street racing happens becauseof the outlaw factor, it's dangerous because of the outlaw factor, it's attractive because of the outlaw factor. Any numbnuts that can figure out how to street race can find a track and race there. It's just not as ***y. I quit street racing because, around here anyway, the atmosphere of it changed some time in the early '90's. More and more, all you found to race was some drunk mullet head in a stock, clapped out 10 year old Monte Carlo SS. All the real car guy's disappeared. I guess I out grew the bull **** and romanticized everything that came before I got fed up with it. I hate that this happened. It's a real tragedy, especially for the families of the dead but, it was the chance they chose to take by attending the event. I'll admit, I would have been right there watching as long as I thought I wouldn't get my self killed doing it but, it's the chance I would have taken, on my own. Lets not be a bunch of hypocrites guy's. Oh street racing, I never did that... Bull ****. Burn out's, I never did that... Bull ****. I'm not defending street racing, it's dumb. But, every time it comes up almost every one of us pretends to be above it...Bull ****!

its a tragedy there are no two ways about it , i wouldnt fault a guy in the white car for driving down a road at 3:00 am thats what roads are for and it does not take excessive speed to kill people with a car im pretty sure he was not exspecting anyone to be standing in the road .. prayers sent for the ones lost..
I fall in the middle. I think it's sad so many died. I feel bad for their families. That said, when you do stupid things, bad things happen. There are repercussions for doing stupid things. I certainly don't think anyone deserved to die but unfortunately, some times it's the only way some learn. Others will likely be back at it in a week or two. When they get hurt, killed or kill someone else, will you feel bad for them?
Yes, I have street raced. I did it pretty regularly when I was younger - in the 80`s. It was fun. As someone already said, it is the "outlaw" part that draws everyone. My local track began having a "King of the Street" night every Thursday. I quit street racing and started going to this. I`m older and wiser and I will tell you that street racing is dumb, but it will never stop. Did these people deserve to die ? Hell no, but if you play with fire, you`ll eventually get burned. I don`t know if we`ll ever know the real story about what happened, but either way, it was an avoidable tragedy.
Street racing is not news,it's a fact of life. I'm sure more of us on this board have done it than not,at least once for giggles, bragging rites,or cash. It simply is what it is. People driving at highway speeds in the dark with no lights is not news either. Once again,it simply is what it is. There is enough empathy to go around for all concerned and I know I'm gonna catch some flak for this but, this finger pointing,no one should ever street race, street racing is dumb, kill 'em all, lock 'em up forever,is a load of kneejerk, mob mentality,****! Where is the, what in the hell is the dumb *** driving down the road at night with no lights, kill 'em all, lock 'em up forever, kneejerk, mob mentality ****,crowd? Having said that, realisticly, when you look at these things from more than 1 P.O.V. it's pretty rare that things like this are the absolute fault of any 1 party or cir***stance, just think about it for a sec. before firing away.................... Generally they are the result of ***mulative error,Ie,an apparently deserted highway+racers burnout and go+spectators crowd into the road to watch+drifting smoke+car driving at highway speed in the dark with no lights=a bad picnic. Now let's change the cir***stances just a bit,an apparently deserted highway+fog patch+man driving at highway speeds in the dark with no lights+someone looking for something that (fell off their car or they hit in that fog patch)=a bad picnic. Now who's the bad guy, dumb***,etc.? Take away or change almost any of cir***stances and no bad occurs. Surely the driver of the Vicky should have had his lights on. Surely the driver of the Vicky should have slowed a bit when he saw the smoke/fog for safeties sake. Surely he could have been paying more attention instead of ******** on the radio or talking on the phone. Surely there were more cars around than just the 2 racing. Surely the spectators shouldn't have been standing in the highway. It's sad for sure, but "**** Happens" is only 1 fact on the immutable facts of life list. It ranks right up there with,death,taxes,20/20 hindsight, and trying to legislate against and/or lock up all stupidity is impossible.
Just my opinion,Phil. I don't feel sorry for people who cheer on street races and go to watch either. I won't apologize for my stand on it. The parents,on the other hand,I fell sorry for. They ***ume that when their kids leave the house, they are coming back. Would I feel any different if one of my sons were there. Sure i'd feel terrible to loose one of my sons, but it would have HIS fault. If you see a street fight between two gangs and go over to watch, and get shot,WHO'S TO BLAME! Not a popular opinion, but that's how I feel. My condolences to the parents and families. No plans on beating you up,Phil. Your honest opinion is admired. This just happens to be MY honest opinion.
No need to apologize, Bob. My OPINION is that it was unsympathtic, in an instance where sympathy was appropiate.
Here is So-Cal there are not that many tracks. Pomona bah, what a joke they are so elite they could care less about anyone who is not an NHRA pro. Fontana is fast becoming that way too since what's his name died. Irwindale is the only real option, but it's an 8th mile track. LACR....gone. Most of the tracks were closed when I was just a wet diapered kid. What other options are available?
Man, Evil, I was about to post the same thing. All of us, from the oldest Fart here to the 15-16 year old pup just starting out has done it. If you say you haven't, then I will say yer a liar. Every one of us here has at some point turned a tire, beat the other guy outa the stop light, or p***ed the buzzy import on the freeway that just flew past you. One thing you can generally be sure of, when you point that finger, there will be 3 more pointing back at you. Put the high horses out to pasture guys, and quit trying to act innocent and guiltless....it is unbecoming.
I see people here complaining about a "high horse" stance on this, but have not read a post by someone who said they never street raced. Did I miss those posts? As long as there are vehicles that move on their own power, there will be people who test themselves and thier machines in a place not meant for it. That is a fact. The smart ones are the ones who get to chose to stop it. I'm glad I was smart enough to stop when I did. These people who died and their friends and families, learned the hard way. Tragic, but a part of life.
don't kill the messenger but did anyone notice that the white car was a chevy caprice? rumor has it (from another message board) that the caprice was an unmarked police car trying to sneak up with lights off and chase down the 2 cars racing. as i say this is just a rumor i caught off another message board so take it with a grain of salt but it does add a different twist to things. the crowd still shouldn't have been out there though. i used to street race and i can tell you looking back now it was a stupid thing to do...seen too many cars wrecked and people hurt.
They haven't used Chevy caprice's for sqad cars in 10 years or better. The car was a Ford Crown vic, wich they do use for police cars. But, this just sounds like a rumor to me.
Hmmm... interesting, but you can best believe that if that was an unmarked police car, a forum site would NOT have been the first place to break the story. CNN would be having a field day with that angle. Plus, an injured police officer would have surely been identified to the EMS workers. The car being a cop car reads like the beginning of a whole batch of rumors that will continue to come out of this. The reality is, by the end of this week, we won't be talking about it anymore. It'll all be forgotten. case in point, remember the drag racer who did the burnout and killed some people who were too close to the highway last year? Forgotten.
oops....i did mean to say crown vic. momentary lapse while reading i guess. tfeverfred....your absolutely right about it being forgotten. here on long island we have no more dragstrips....i know of a street race almost every night the weather is good. people complain about it all the time and yet they just shot down a proposal to build a new track and instead are building an indoor ski slope.
Well for those of us that live in the area that it happened we know the tracks here close first snow. The stretch it happened on contrary to other comments here IS NOT well lit Fitysix seems to know the area near PG and Charles county line. Many rumors flying from inside sources i have heard that the Cronw Vic was being chased moments before it happened (may never know). I have spoke to several people at the scene spectators and people who where hit by the car aswell, non saw headlights on the Vic. Lets be honest how many can honeslty say they have NEVER street raced?? this includes goosing the gas from a light messing with someone (police say speed conest to that) so how many are guilty on that alone??? I lost several friends there that night and it is a tragedy. As for the age gap is this not the same thing we would see a the drag strip? I used to take my son who is now 18 to Vstreet, Metro, Aspen Hill, (those close to the area might know these places)to spectate. I know many of the guys who "Street Race" and they also go to the track when they are open. Many of the races such as the one going that night are BIG money races 5-10grand with sub 10 sec cars. yeah shame it happened my thoughts are with the families of those we lost.
Also street raced, and realize it was kind of a dumb thing...but I think there's a big difference between now and a few years ago. that friggin 'Fast and the Furious' movie has done more to damage our hobby than anything else. Prior to that movie, most of the illegal street racing was done by car guys, who more often than not built their car, and knew what the car could take and what it couldn't (or shouldn't). After that movie, every ****wad in their mother's Honda bolted on a farty exhaust tip and started weaving in and out of traffic, causing accidents, and giving ALL modified cars a bad name. In Connecticut, we've had a number of kids killed recently flying around in WRX's...who's letting their kids get these cars? I digress, and am not condoning any kind of illegal racing...just stating that the unwritten rules have changed a lot.
The line I always use is that you don't say a man was killed last night at a boxing match in a local pub.... It was a bar fight, not a boxing match.
Nice, a bunch of so-called hot-rodders preaching about the evils of street racing. Funny, how street racing was safe and OK back in 1960, or 1970, or 1980, or 1990 whenever YOU were doing it, but NOW it's unsafe and everyone who does it is a total ****bag, is ruining everything, and deserves to die. Can you say "HYPOCRITE"????
Yeah, very bad situation,no matter who as at fault, everyone of those dead people has mothers and family................. Kinda ironic talking about it as many of us have or had vehicles with mega horsepower built for ripping down the road.
wtf? it's not the car.. try the parents. Try teaching responsibility and respect. Try to not be an old fuddy duddy before your time.
Wasnt there a well recieved thread on here about who really street raced awhile back? Im not really for street racing, not against it. Its a case by case scenario, even though it is illegal. However, people have to know thier boundaries, but Im not about to act like I never did it.
