i'm about to have my frame built for my 32 ford truck. I want to channel the bed and cab about 3-4 inches about frame depth. any way i'm kinda inbetween what rearend to use. I got a 40 ford axle that i think would be to narrow incase i channel it then i got a 70's model ford rearend out of a truck that is 60 inches wide i'm torn on which one to use. I am worried the wider one will look to ****ing goofy if it sticks way out on sides. but i don't want the 7.50 tires to rub on the bed lip. i got a guy that is going to want the rearend and all parts ready to put on jig and start securing in place. Also i am running a y block with a cruizo matic in it and think that 40 will go to hell quick with bigger v 8
If you guys have any pictures and or ideas i would appreciate it.

Channeling it the width of the frame rails shouldn't get into the bed lip. Even with a 7.50 tire, there's more than 4" of clearance there on an unchanneled truck. Of course if you're building something with a 36" Z in the rear all this goes out the window.

Unless you really show your ***, that '40 rear should be OK behind the Y-block & Cruise-O-Matic. Something to think about though.... will you run an open driveline conversion or torque tube? What will it cost to go either route? Brakes on the '40 will most-likely cost more than the brakes on the 9". Parts for the 9" will be easier to find. What bolt pattern are your wheels?

FWIW, the '40 rear in my RPU consisted of parts from 5 rear ends with some new pieces thrown in as well. By the time I had a good rear end ***embled I had as much in it as a narrowed 9" would have cost. Be sure you have a good one.

Spending a few hundred bucks to have your local drag racer narrow the 9" might be $$ well spent. Hell, even buying a new narrowed housing might be $$ well spent.

Id run the 40 rear. If it is a 70's ford truck rear chances are its 65" outside to outside. This will look funny if you run 7.50x16 tires. Go with the banjo. Looks cooler too.

Your going to end up with a 6" channel it you go the the bottom of the frame rail.

ford truck 9 inch rear axles are 61.25 inches wide from brake drum face to brake drum up to 1972 after that they are 65 inches. so if you have a early that would not be to wide.
