"Expensive" is a relative term. What could a decent original 3WD body sell for? 20K? Then you have to strip it, beat some dents out, & repair a little rust. The man who can afford the decent body to start with is most likely paying someone else to build the car. By the time his original is as nice as this SAR body, he has 30K in it easily.... & he probably couldn't care less whether it is original or new steel. But this has all been argued before...... original vs. reproduction, bought vs. built, soul, character, cost, etc..... Then add in the rare find that someone drags home for 5K. Yeah, this always makes for a good arguement. JH
I like the old cars not the new ones made to imitate them but there is a market I guess, leaves more old tin needing fixing for guys like me. I'd rather spend two thousand hours repairing an old '32 or '34 body than buy new tin. It's just more satisfying.
Just checked it out.He dont have anything reasonable.995.00 to over 1k just for a decklid.Geesh. What makes that repop worth 30k?I could see 10-15,But I think he is a little steep.
Harrison is right on the money. Anyone that thinks that price is too steep has not paid or gotten paid to patch up a rusted, beat up, crooked chopped, half channeled old body before. Can I afford one? Nope. But if I had started with a pristine body I would have drove it last year instead of patching up the turd I could afford. Look at the upside, 1.5 million invested in tooling so that rich dudes can have brand new body (and pay shop owners to build for them) and regular dudes like most of us can buy all the pieces to patch our originals. I don't see a down side.
If you have seen any of Steve's Auto Restorations work you know that these and the panels are going to be of the highest quality and I'm sure well worth the money. If you haven't go here http://www.stevesautorestorations.com/ and look around.
if i had the cash i would def go for it. sure!..theres nothing like vintage but what about the patch panels we often use. i see guys buy some ****py cars and patch the hell out of them..im one of them. thast cuz i cant afford so i do as my wallet says. you only get what you pay for. besides...steel is steel. and who knows. maybe these bodies are beeing made from all those nice oldies that the city sent to the s**** yard when the house was sold..aint that vintage enought for ya!
I'm waiting for the 5 window to come out. oh... and I'm also waiting for 30 G's to fall out of the sky.
Guys do a search before you post, I covered this body last week when I did a search of Who Makes the Best Repro 34 3W bodies. Just thought I'd save Ryan some space who makes the best '34 3 window repo bodies? Quote: Originally Posted by hemisteve On that note, anyone know of steel repro '33/'34 3W bodies being built? If Ryan is concerned over space, He will definitely tell us and we will be more than happy to search for a repe***ive post before we post anything. By this post count, the first posts must have been missed. Sorry about the "old news"
Great news! Think how many gennie 3 windows will now be spared from running 20" Torque Thrusts with LS-1s!
oh what an awesome looking body! first time i saw them this morn. buy that body, then go buy a nice driver sedan, switch bods, sell the sedan body & rear fenders & you could be cruising in a 3 window.
Open invitation to all of the haters: 1. Pull a couple of million out of your 401K 2. Spend a couple of years getting all of your ducks in a row making a project of this magatude happen. 3. Put the finished product on the market for ,lets say, $1995. 4. Make millions of dollars (become one of the gold chainers) 5. Use profits (like there will be any) to buy up the gennie stuff and die a happy man knowing you haven''t suc***ed to the hated repo demon. Frank
I don't think $30k is out of line for what he is selling. He wouldn't even be making the things if there wasn't some profit in it and the originals weren't sky high. The 32 3 windows are $25k and I have a feeling they aren't as high quality as SARs bodies. Now, when you find a way to get 30 G's to fall out of the sky let me know, but I need 33 G's so I can get the fenders too! regards, DJ
'Glas bodies are $10-15,000,depending on what you are buying. Steel is much more expensive to manufacture and ***emble. And a Coupe is much harder than a Roadster. So until Horrible Freight starts selling ****ty imported body panels....
Probably would have been cheaper not to use any wood. But that makes it tougher to attach the upholstery.
I didn't mind it until I watched the video on their web site. That voice over was so corny that I cant take them seriously.
im not a hater i think its a cool concept of making repo steel bodies maybe if they sell enough of them the price might come down where an ordinary joe schmoe like myself could afford one ..
The ordinary joe schmoe will never be able to afford them on purpose. The supply will be limited, to make those who can buy the car, feel special / important. Also when you are one of two or three outfits producing a wanted product, you can name your price. There are people out there willing to pay the big bucks. Why do you think Brookville bodies cost as much as they do? I would rather build 10 bodies a year for 30 K, rather than 20 bodies a year for 15 K.......
If you consider the millions of investment, $30,000 is cheap.... As a small shop owner, I cant get my head around the magnitude of time and capitol investment a product like this takes to produce.
Not millions. They've already been making, building roadsters with, and selling everything but the roof & door tops, so they've been recouping those individual small piece by piece investments for quite a while now. Making the turret to build a whole coupe was only a natural progression. With rapid prototyping, Kirksite dies, and Brookvilles presses, you'd be surprised how little it cost (compared to what most people are thinking) to develope the roof section and door tops. I'm not knocking them, it's no small feat, I'm glad they're doing it.
I know the feeling. I'm afraid we are about 60 years too late to afford this sort of stuff. Truth is, most hot rods are far too expensive for the average joe and that won't change. Look around here and see the stuff guys do and you'll see that one can do a lot for less money but no matter how you slice it cool car stuff costs bucks..... The positive side to this is that if one spends the money and puts in a lot of sweat equity there is a chance you can recoup your costs plus some. regards, DJ
