Help. Either this is weird or I'm not too smart.Or a combo.I've gotta 56 Ford Fairlane Town Sedan with a Thunderbird package 292 y-block v-8. I changed the oil and tried to get a filter adapter from Concours for a reg filter cause it has the old canister kind. The new one didn't look like it would fit or adapt anyway. So, I soaked and blew out, with air the old filter and put it back in with the new oil. Here is the weird part. In the center bottom of the filter canister there is a metal tubing breather tube pointing down. Now , when the car is parked flat the tube is leaking a lot of oil. What the F is this tube and did cleaning the filthy filter cause oil to come through it and drip out this tube? Where can I get a normal guy filter? How do I fix this ? Anybody!

Thats not an oil filter,it's the crank case breather tube with a guaze inner to prevent too much dirt going into the engine isn't it?

The oil filter is the big round cannister three inches away from the thing you are talking about, the crankcase breather, which should be cleaned throughly, especially the little tube that extends into the block. They have new filters and gaskets for these (Concours has them I'm sure).

Isn't the breather tube and all that going into the valve covers on top? This tube points down under the block and is atleast an 1 1/2" in diameter, and steel. On top of it facing up is a cannister filter which is easily found looking down from top of motor on right side. If this isn't the oil filter then I guess I haven't been able to find and sure feel dumb. This filter is gauzy and smaller than the oil filter Concours sent me. I'm an idiot.

Nope, they're right. That's the road draft tube and filter. Do you see any pcv stuff on the engine? Unless someone retrofitted it or it's later model, it shouldn't have any. Somethin ain't right though, they might leak a little bit, but not a lot. Oil filter's in the big case toward the rear on the same side. I got some pics here somewhere...

Did you take the whole assembly off or just the can? There's a gasket that goes between the assembly and the block that could probably leak quite a bit if it was damaged or not there. Also, there's an o-ring seal on the bottom of the canister. If that's not seated correctly, it'll spit a bit. Sometimes the filter can prevent it from seating if it's been squashed/damaged too... Pull it back off and have a look. Good luck!

No, I didn't take the whole assembly off. I don't know why it's leaking so much. Do they leak a little ever? That picture does show the front filter which is the one I mistakenly took off. I thought it was the oil filter. Guess I just needed to look further back, duh. I really jumped the gun there. Do all old blocks have these? This is the first I've encountered like this anyway. I may have damaged the O-ring though, it was pretty rotten. If so, do you know where to get one? That Concours filter and adapter may fit after all for the oil filter that is. This is the first one of these for me. Thanks for all the help!

  9. There is an oil sender in that area maybe it is leaking. the filter adapters off of 223 6cly fords will work on Y blocks.Good luck with the boat anchor:D OldWolf

Might pay to give the engine a good clean if the oil filter is really hard to find. :)

My draft tube drips about a dime size puddle after a drive on my ranchero. It will leak out of the long tube that extends to the ground. If it is leaking at the canister you definetly need a new o-ring. I got one from NAPA by just taking the canister in and finding one that was close. Tractor Supply, Autozone, Advanced. Anyone of these should be able to do the same. On a side note....does anyone know if the filter for the road draft tube is sold by someone, or maybe a suitable replacement?

  13. :cool:I thought i might add this information.1963 292s had a factory plate over that road draft cast hole. They used a pcv that was run from the valley cover to an aluminum spacer between the carb and intake. you can find this spacer on lots of 289,302, 352.390s and other ford engines.I would highly recomend retrofitting a pcv valve to those Y blocks. It will cut down on blow by also it sucks out unburnt combustion gases and moisture from condensation. That will help keep the oil cleaner and the engine last longer.:cool:OldWolf

If your engine is creating a lot of blowby, the leakage will be worse. Every one I've ever had has leaked a little bit. Napa has/can get all the filters/seals for that engine. I think the Road draft filter comes with a new o-ring. But as already mentioned, you can just take the canister and match up one to fit. True closed PCV systems didn't really become the norm until the early to mid 60's...

  15. Did you put too much oil in it? It will run out like crazy if you did...

You know, maybe it isn't as bad as I think. It doesn't leak at the cannister, it only pisses out after a good drive and, it may have been a little on the full side(first oil change on her since I picked it up) Also, I don't think I'm getting too much blow by. It has an Edlebrock I retrofitted to it. A 650cfm jetted down. It does run a little rich still. And, it is straight piped into 80" lake pipes off the stock manifolds. It'll blow a little black smoke after sitting for a week and because it's running a little rich. I checked the plugs not long ago and they were okay too(tan) in color so, not too rich.

take the pan off make an adapter and put a moon breather on it, or block it off and pcv it. Or you can get a t-bird valley pan with the breather on it.

  18. That is one beautiful motor, my friend. What's it out of/ going into?

I'm sure you've got it sorted out by now but Dennis Carpenter sells the crankcase breather screen for 7 bucks. It comes with a new o ring too.

The road draft filter can be bought from most old Ford parts suppliers. I wouldn't be surprised that NAPA has them
