i'm working on what i believe is an actual 1957 ford 9" rear , it has a bottom drain plug and no dimples in the housing. i've messed with many 9 inchers , but i have never seen anything like this....the pinion seal is about 4-1/4" in outside diameter and looks nothing like what i will call the "normal" pinion seal that i have replaced in many other rears. Napa was no help , they showed the seal to be 18833....the same number i have used in other rears, but it is not correct is this a one year only thing , or something special? anyone have a part number or an idea what i'm talking about? i could take a picture and post it if it would help
I have the same thing. I haven't tried to run down the seal yet, but don't expect a prob;lem. Google John's 9" Factory and give them a call. Worst case, update the pinion carrier to a later model like you have seen before.
Could it be one of the 'bigger Ford rears? I remember someone telling me they made a 9 1/2 or so. They could have been feeding me a line though.
thank's all for the help. it is a `57 rear end. i wanted to slap this together this weekend and get it out of here . i'll give john's a call update: i called john's and they told me it was unique to the very early 9 inchers.... 4.125 OD.... National number SLS 6930......$47 ...i have one on order from carqust
The large seal identifies it as a true 1957 carrier. I removed a rear end out of an all original 1957 to put in my 1940 Ford. They are a one year only item. The seal costs about 3 times as much as a 1958 up seal, but they aren't too hard to get.
