Ok I have a 29 ford roadster with a 289 out of a 65 mustang. Now for the problem when I crank the car over it wont fire BUT as soon as i let off the key it fires!! This causes it to flood out when its cooled and its ******* me off. So any help anyone could give me would be great. Cafr still has points and a ballist resistor both have been replaced and it did the same thing be for i replaced them.. I searched on here for anyone having this problem and after about an hour of searching i decided to just post myself. Again Thankx for any help anyone can provide..

That was often caused by the starter drawing so much current to turn the motor, none was left to fire the plugs. First, clean and tighten all the connections from the battery through the relay to the starter, including grounds.
If that makes no difference, take the back cover off the starter and check the commutator and brushes.

ignition switch... no voltage to coil while cranking

  4. so , it's not getting power to the coil while it's cranking....could be the ignition switch. the coil needs power while the switch is in the start position

or maybe it has what i call a byp*** circuit around that ballast resister to get full 12 volts to the coil for starting..maybe something is wrong with that... loose wire , etc .

Some startmotors have a separate connection that gives 12Volt during cranking and a wire is connected from to the + side of the coil, when you stop cranking the voltage comes from the ignition switch ( but it will not provide any voltage from th ignition switch during cranking).

If the wire from the starter is broken or not connected, it will cause extact the probleb you have.

sounds like the solinoid is ****.try running a jumper from the plus treminal to the coil & see if it starts, you'll have to yank the jumper off to shut it off

  7. Your problem is probably at the solonoid. Ford uses a 4 pole sol. for breaker point dist. 1 wire should go from I pole on it directly to dist. side of the Ballast so you have a full 12V under cranking. Once it fires and the Key is in the run position you have ign power to the Ballast droping voltage. There is no Voltage on the Ign pole of a Ford key switch while in the Starter ingauge position.

So i should start by checking all the wires and voltages. If those are all good then??? ( change the solonoid ) ?

Also Thankx Everyone for the info I will be heading to the shop tonight to check those things and a few others.. And again Thankx Mike

  10. I'd use a volt meeter on the Dist. side of the Ballast and check for 12v with starter ingauged. If you have no or low voltage while cranking take a jumper wire from starter Cyl. and go to Coil side of ballast. That should give you 12v for starting only.
