It's getting down to the wire. Heading out to Earl Schieb's place in TN tonight to pick up Big Olds. We're hauling Dad's '56 down and leaving it there for Mike to do some touch up paint and bodywork and bringing Big Olds home to Michigan where he belongs. It's been a long, lonely 7 months without him.

So, basicly everything is done that needs to be done for the Detroit Autorama with the exception of the undercarriage and I'm running outta time.

If you're interested in helping detail the undercarriage I'm going to throw a detailing party on Saturday March 1st, 11am at Ralfs56's barn. I'll supply food and drink, you bring your muscles and sweat equity.:D

Basicly the wheels need to come off and be scrubed, including tread, the wheelwells need to be scrubbed and painted, the underside of the engine needs to be degreased, and detailed, including probaly some paint, basicly everything on the underside needs to be cleaned after 72,000 road miles. I'll have scrub brushes, wire brushes, soap, buckets, and anything else I can think of. Please bring eye protection and anything else you think might come in handy.

This is a work party, I need the help. Anyone who wants to just look can do so in a couple of weeks at Cobo.;)

Oh yeah, Scott has a brand new lift so it will make life ALOT easier. :D

One more thing, if anyone has any experiance with the ISCA rules and indoor car show judging, I would love for you to come and give me your honest opinion on what else I need to do to make Big Olds shine as brightly as possible during the Autorama. This is a one time only for Big Olds as it is too much work to do again for a driver.

He's basicly off Ford and M-14, easy to find. When you pull in the driveway follow the driveway to the right all the way around in back.

Sound off if you plan on attending so I can get a rough idea for food and stuff.

    Thanks!

  2. Can't wait to see "Big Olds" in all his new glory, Denise! Good luck and see you at Cobo...

    Good Luck Denise,
Sorry the logistics are not good for me nor the fact that my wife and me are thoroughly imprisoned by the flu.

I wish you the best and I know you'll document all the good stuff for our viewing pleasure.:)

try to see if you could get your mitts on a steam cleaner.seeing as it will be on a lift you should be able to blast all that road grime off fairly easy.

For show, doing the underside last is kinda backwards. Having said that, pressure wash and clean everything, then break out the POR-15 and the paint brushes. There won't be any brush marks when the paint dries. I like gloss black myself. Good luck!!

let me get this straight---you want a bunch of guys to come to your house, drink beer and clear your rear end? you want a lube job too?

  23. Is it undercoated? Do you need propane torches and scrapers?

Riley has a dentist appointment that morning, but I'll try and make it out that afternoon, since it's practically in my backyard. ;)

yeah she found a surf board (its mine....well hers now...)....problem is I got friggen "activated" short notice and cant seem to find the ability to get in the attic from North Island Ca....(the attic is in FL)

dumb luck I guess.....sorry denise...I'll be home in the next week or so....................hopefully

Seriously denise....if you and your pops is gonna be close to j-ville and are able....or have other minions to pick the thing up....I make the wifie go up in the attic and fetch it... (that'll cost me)

If not we'll go with the original plan....if you still need it (seems we're all running out of time)

  25. I know you guys will have fun, even though it is work! For those of us that have watched Big Olds for all these years (15?) it will be fun seeing Steves and now your dream finished. I bet more guys from the HAMB have been in the backseat of Big Olds.............wow, that was sounding bad!

  26. .......the POR-15 does do a nice job and when time is short ....works fast. Denise you should think about grabbing a can and some brushes..........just an idea.:)

    Hi, Denise...

I worked for ISCA for over eight years ('79-'88) but I was just a cartoonist/editor of Show Stopper and didn't get into judging. I did get to know enough of them and what they did, though, attended two Grande Finales and heard many stories. What the looked for was ingenuity and lots of attention to detail. "Clean" is a given.

Chassis mods, clean welds, etc., overall good work were the points grabbers. Did I mention lots of attention to detail? Good luck! See you there.

    Bill

  30. Denise,
I too worked for the ISCA as a judge and as an occasional Judging Supervisor from 1977 thru 1984. During this time I built a car to compete for the Riddler and was runner up in 1986 (this was back when winning the Riddler was an obtainable goal by a mere working slug like myself) and finished top 10 in the Great Lakes Division in 1986.

Your first indoor show in competition is an exciting time. Just remember that once you enter the door upstairs in Cobo Hall, all cars are judged as show cars.

As we discussed the other day, I plan to be in the basement this year.
Call me if you need any advice.

    John
