Just a bit of info about Georgia titles. Georgia NEVER titled a vehicle before 1963. So if you buy a car from Georgia 62 or older, no title was ever issued. In 1982 or so Georgia passed a law stating that any car 15 years or older didn't HAVE to have a title. Now, I'm not clear if the 15 year rule still applies or not, but there are some years that cars WERE titled at one point, but now do not require a title. If you lose a title or drop a title in the chain of ownership in one of these years, it will NEVER be issued again. BUT, if you buy a car from out of state in one of these years with a valid title, they will issue you a new GA title for that year. Confused yet? I deal mainly with mid 60's cars, which are not REQUIRED to have a title, but did at one point, and can be re titled if they come in with a valid title from out of state. I make sure I get every car titled in my name promptly as soon as I get it. It makes selling it later on a lot easier with a valid title. I've sold several however, with just a notarized bill of sale and a copy of my last registration. Always ask the owner for a copy of his last registration. If the car was not running, you will probably be out of luck because I'm sure he will not have registered and insured it just to have it sitting around.
I agree with the guy that suggested going to the younger chicks in the courthouse or tax offices because I have bought a shitload of cars over the years and almost ALWAYS had trouble with the old bitties in there trying to show thier freakin authority status game which basically screws YOU just because they want to head trip out and show the NEW GALS how it's done CORRECTLY ! You loose and the old bitties just grin at you on your way out the door , then they keep those damn "Eagle Eyes" out for you when you try and sneak back in with a baseball cap and shades on ! LOL
I was just thinking the same thing, I even thought about doing a thread on it, but figured someone would have spoke up by now.
I transfered a NY registration for my 31 roadster with no problems, got tags that day and in a few weeks had my title...altho, the title says 1931 Roadster Convertible...nothing about it being a Ford... a typo.....but a good title and antique tags that run out next month
Well, turns out the guy working in the business next to me has a friend who works in one of our tax offices! She said to fill out a 130u form and a 131, turn in the out of state registration card or title, pay the tax and wait a week or two. just like Fidgiter said. Hell, she said she'd do it for me! I don't even have to go down there.
