tech: "how to keep your hands and stuff clean when striping!"

    [/ QUOTE ]

    I doubt that it's possible.

Keep in mind I'm only a beginner, but I kinda got the loading and palleting the brush deal sussed out early enough. However, sometimes had the paint a little too sloppy and of course it'd run down to the point of the brush and I'd end up with a big blob at the beginning of my line. So I started using my fingertips to squeeze the bristles and get rid of the bulk paint at the working end of the brush. What else I learned from that is that I also get a much better 'feel' for the paint. Y'know, not to moist, not to dry, but just right for pulling a line. So now I find myslef doing that as a matter of course, each time I load the brush.

My problem is the automatic reaction, which I guess is kind of a bloke/guy thing, y'know, wiping the sticky painty fingers on the leg of my brand new Levis. And of course I did that the first time after SWMBO suggested I shouldn't be wearing new jeans when I'm painting. But of course I hadda respond with, "This is not messy painting, so there's no need to change into anything a bit grungy."

The first pair of new jeans she 'lived' with, the second pair, done the following day...... well that's a whole different ballgame.

Can I blame Whodaky for that too. [IMG]

1-Shot can I didn't even wash out;picked it out of the trash

    [/ QUOTE ]

So now my question is, how do ya use all the paint and still have such a neat and tidy can afterwards? [IMG]

    [/ QUOTE ]
Carps:I usually pour the 1-Shot into smaller(1/4 pint)cans so I can carry more colors with less weight and have less waste. If a 1/4 pint can goes bad,you pitch it;if a pint can goes bad,you skim it and keep using it.That particular can I had just emptied into smaller cans a couple days ago.BTW I love the box!Doing really good stuff!
As far as keeping your hands clean,it's difficult but not impossible.I palette my brush on a glossy magazine(the kind my wife gets 50 of every day in the mail)rather than with my fingers.Use an aluminum clipboard that I've added feet to(if I'm using it by itself)and also a center bolt to mount it to an old camera tripod. The clipboard I bought at a stationery supplier and the tripod was a yard sale find.I keep several around the shop.I also have small metal cups attached that I can put the 1oz medicine cups in for my thinner and/or custom mixed paints.I have a medium sized alligator clip attached also that I use to hold a paint brush when it isn't being used(I don't know how many brushes I've had roll off the palette when I'm not looking).
another thing I've found that works nicely is if you are working over a surface that is going to be cleared, you can keep the fingerprints to a minimum by wearing a cheap cotton glove on the hand you use to steady yourself.I tried using one on my painting hand by cutting off the fingers but it was more bother than anything.
A good idea when working is to have a clean paper towel and some wax and grease remover handy in case you either get paint on your hands or the work.I use this rather than the thinner I'm using because it wipes cleaner and dries faster(mineral spirits will stay wet forever on the surface you're trying to stripe!).
As far as getting 1-Shot on your clothes:if you want to have any chance of getting it out afterwards, clean off as much as you can immediately with mineral spirits and then put a goodly amount of brush oil on the remaining part.It will keep the paint from setting until you can clean it properly.Carbon tetrachloride(Carbona Cleaning Fluid)used to be good for getting paint out but I don't know how available it is now and you DONT want to have that stuff laying against your skin for any length of time!(I think its carcinogenic anyway).
Well the rant is over;enjoy the rest of the show!

Here's my '49 Shoebox model I've been working on. It's nearing completion, but I haven't loaded all the pix to the web yet. Here's one from about Monday afternoon of the interior. I think this is the first model I've built in nearly 10 years, so it might not be top notch, but I've test-fitted the body to the frame and it will look sweet!

Not really mine, I just found it last week. It's a picture of a WWII firefight taken by my grandfather from the ball turret of his B-17:

Yeah, you wouldn't even know what it was just looking at it. I think it's one of the coolest things I have from him. I figured since monday was memorial day and today is the 60th anniversary of D-day, I'd throw it up on the art show.

Ditto on the coolness factor of that shot wayfarer. Been playing oround with my paint box today, Old oil paint box from estate sale $5.00, gas pump sign from a garage sale, $2.00, learning to stripe it yourself, priceless. [IMG]

Great stuff as usual guys. That's right Mr Carp's blame it all on me. The really sad part is you have only been messing around with these lines for a number of weeks and it looks like you are already better than me.
Wayfarer that firefight shot is amazing. Almost a striped design in itself.
Here's a couple of shots. Was messsing with the paints the other night an had the Z ero chopper book laying around and thought it would make a great canvas. It did!
The model is just one of the many mock ups I did of the Deuce 3 window diecast I showed last week. Good to see a few more models on here!

I wish this picture posting would play a consistant game game for me.
Mr Carp's just read the rest of your long winded posts. No don't blame it all on me. I am not one of those stripers who pulls a brush load of paint through his fingers and would never encourage anyone to do so!. I am the type that if I did that I would end up with finger prints everywhere. You've seen how I work and in the professional manner I do so. My striping technique, my banter with the person I maybe striping for and anyone else who may be looking on. It is all part of the stripers package. Working in front of a bunch of people can be very intimidating to be sure.
Safari I like your idea about the use of a camera tripod.

  26. Thanx for the advice Ray, I think I have a long way to go before mine's even a poofteenh as good as your stuff.

The smallest cans I've been able to find here are one pint. However, I've been using up a bit by mixing it in 1/2 pint cans to develop my own colours.

Thanx, that means a lot to me. I had no plan when I started, just to practice and try and get some symetry in my work. Sorta just kept going adding colours and trying different strokes to see what I'd get. The hardest thing I've found is 'less often is more' and it was tough to stop when I did with the glovebox lid, coz the conservative part of me said, "that's cool" and the crazy part said, "needs more colours and line."

I can see how that might also help the paint stay moist longer, I'm using the old used car guidses and such with pages like the phone book. The paint doesn't soak thru but it does seem to dry out quicker than I'd like.

Cups and stuff came from the kitchen (while SWMBO wasn't looking) and I found a pencil case thingy with integrated clips that's perfect for keeping the brushes in place and organised.

Thanx again. My next project is to combine striping with photography by adding lines to a couple of photos. If it works OK I'll post 'em here, if not, well they'just go in the bin and you'll never know.

You should see some of my earlier work. Man if I wasn't leaving fingerprints I was sticking my support finger on the brush hand into the still wet lines I had just put down. I still dunno how you do some of the stuff I've seen you do without doing that.

And you build models too. God your got some talent for a BIG UGLY BUGGER. You get caught up with the banter, I find that hard to believe.
Hey Mr Carp's I got little cans the last time I bought Solvers at a Paint Right store. The paint came in 500 ML cans but they had 250 ML cans that I bought and did what Safari said to do.

  29. Carps:
Here are some pix of my palettes that I use.The legs are constructed with parts readily available at a good hardware store. The feet, long hex nuts, etc.are reasonably priced also. You can use any clipboard but I like the aluminum as it is a bit sturdier than either fiberboard or plastic and is impervious to solvents. One of the palettes was an old photo light stand and the top is held on by a knurled head screw. It is designed so you can mount it either flat for working or at 90 degrees for storage. It even has a carry handle on it.Someone gave it to me at a job I was doing;they'd had it kicking around the shop for years.I mounted the clipboard to it and it was ready to work. On one of them the metal cups are store bought at an artist supply store while the other one has screw top lids from 1-quart cans affixed. They work just as well and are free!
