So I built a set of headers from a Speedway kit with 1 5/8" primaries. Personally I don't like the look of a capped exhaust with a downpipe off the megaphone. I think it clutters up the side of the car, plus my sedan is only 5" off the ground so not much room to run the exhaust anyways. However I do enjoy my hearing somewhat and want to put some baffles in these things. Is there a place to get them? Does anyone use Harley Davidson baffles in their hot rods? What's the best design if I end up having to make them? I await your collective sage advice.
http://www.lakeheaders.com/ sells removeable baffles. They are an alliance vendor. That where I'm gonna get mine when I get to that point.
A tech article that was done a while ago to make your own http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=43062
I've got a set of the lakeheaders baffles. Bought the kit and welded them up in about an hour. You can build them cheaper, but the kit comes with everything you need, no chasing for parts. I'm very happy with them...
try patriot....i used the old cut off cherry bomb on my lakes headers back in 2000.....no caps... brandon
Pardon my ignorance, I've only built racecars where I didn't have to worry about stuff like this. Is it common to put individual baffles in each of the primary pipes? That's kind of what I was thinking about doing. I checked out the Patriot stuff and their baffles went inside the megaphone.
Mine are just the open snakes without collectors so bought 8 motorcycle baffles from a guy on eBay who sells them for $5.99 for 2.
I found that the Harley guys throw away the stock mufflers and pipes. I cut open a set and found nice baffle/difuser inside attached to a chrome cone that just fit inside the 3 1/2 meg on lakes headers. Threw away all the fibergl***, cut the lenght to fit, drilled out the little tiny holes to 1/4 inch, bout 100 holes. Now the car don't fill up with exhaust either. the cone gets the exhaust away from the body. used 3 screws in each baffle, thru the meg side to attach. Frank
Go toyour local harley shop,I baught mine at a shop in oklahoma city for about 2 or 3 bucks a piece. they make them a couple differant sizes. Later,Phil.
Yes- They work pretty well too. It's a big improvement for $24. It still has a nice idle (sounds like 4 harleys) but at cruise it's really quiet, and at full throttle it's just pretty damn loud instead of insanely ****ing loud like before.
Speedway sells an 'auger' insert that works great, cheap too. I use them on my 450 hp Vette and it keeps it quiet without choaking it. They are 3" or 3.5" $15 each Keith
Auger baffles don't work in a lake header they don't do any baffling they just spin the exhaust, I have tried everything. You need a 1 3/4" baffle with a minimum of 3 discs to move exhaust in and out of the 1 3/4" baffle core ... At idle it is noisy but at a constant speed they really do a good job...
