flow benches and vacum(SIC) cleaners

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by porknbeaner, Feb 24, 2008.

  1. Hey fellas long time no speak.:D

I've been looking for an old article either from Popular Mechanics or Mechanics Illustrated I'm going to guess from the later '50s or the '60s ( a good portion of that time is a blur to me:eek:).

Any way back then they published a how too article on how to make a flow bench from a vacuum cleaner. If anyone has a copy of the article in your collection you would be willing to copy and ship to me???

    Thanks in advance,
    Benno

You can find better, more up to date home made flow bench info
    on the tractorsport.com flowbench forum.

  3. I've not heard about that article, but I know Car Craft did much the same thing in the early '80s...I do have that one. PM me if you'd like it & I'll copy it for ya.

This sort of thing won't really give you specific numbers that are relatable to conventionally published figures, but it will (mostly) allow you to see the effects of changes you make. Very subtle changes are hard to see without considerably more vacuum power. I used this sort of bench in the beginning & got fairly surprising results with it. :)

Car Craft Magazine had a "How To" build in there August of '82 and how to operate it in September '82. They used a vacuum cleaner and showed how to make the manometer (spl ?).

  5. Basically the idea is to get a benchmark and work from there. I've done a lot of old school porting tricks over the years the torch being the most popular and reliable for an out in the garage job.

Just thought it would be fun to put the vacuum cleaner job together and make it work.

Sure I'd love a copy of the later article. I'll fire you off a PM.

Hey Unk I'll go and scope that site out. Thanks for the info.

  6. I have several articles like that scanned.
Yes, old Car Craft mags -- that rings a bell.
Most of them were scanned and posted on the web.
I'll see if I can scare up the links.

It may be a week before I get to it, though.
If I forget and you still need them, PM me to remind me.

Car Craft did it twice...1970's, I think...once, powered with an old McCulloch blower, once with several industrial vac cleaner units.

There is an article in "Mopar Tech Special" Issue #7 from 1997, by the editors of Mopar Action. It is a 9 page article that goes in to a lot of detail. It is built using a shop vac. I have always wanted to build it but never have. If you like, I can scan it and e-mail it to you, pm with your e-mail.
