The 'cost to pleasure' ratio is about the same as steel and glass too.

i prefer steel , but since us older guys rendered very many of the popular cars ,ie 32-40 fords chopped up crumpled wrecks on 1/4 mile dirt tracks .puts the blame for the unavailability of steel bodies that can be afforded on us.i have one friend that is building glass cars and another that is gearing up to build 36 ford 3 windows, 41 willys coupes and the usual 32 - 34`s, so i feel like its cool to do f/g if thats what you want .if for no other reason the glass helps guys that want a car get one .hope i haven`t offended anyone .

If you're grinning ear to ear when you're going down the road burning gas in it, I would guess you already have your answer, and you don't even need us holding your hand.

My model A body cost $1000, how much is a fiberglass one?
Repairing a steel body is as easy or easier, unless you can't weld.
A glass body ways about as much as a steel one, even though a lot of people think otherwise!
So I don't see any reason to run a glass one!!
For me it will always be steel, original steel that is.

Not to get into the what's considered real, but I would have a hard time justifying the savings to build a glass A. For a steel A, the extra few hundred spent up front would equal a greater desirability a few years down the road.

First off, it's YOUR car, do what YOU want and screw the guilt. Secondly, dreaming and saving for steel is cool while you drive glass. Ya gotta do, what ya gotta do. There's a cemetary full of guys who held off having fun, while waiting for the steel '32 "barn find".

I'd rather have glass. I'd want to drive it every day, and i'd be less likely to kill idiots in parking lots for opening their doors up on it. That, and no rust.

I'd rather see all of you driving glass A roadsters than PT Crusers! It's the thought process that counts.

I look at the Craftsmanship, uniqueness and innovation, not if its Glass or Steel.

  14. I have a glass 32 roadster,,,

I drive it and enjoy it,,,the people that ask is it glass or steel are usually clueless,,,and their opinions don't bother me one way or another.

I have said it many times,,",It may not be real but it's real fun!" HRP

I think it's funny all these guys saying that glass bodies last longer. the steel bodies we are using have been around and hotrodded for over 75 years and are still going. how many of these glass bodies will be around that long?? they will be cracked and deteriorated long before then.

I don't like glass bodies because on alot of them there is obvious difference between the real car. even the good bodies have a missing bolt here a smoothed out edge there. makes them more for the street rod crowd than the hot rodder.

  16. I prefer steel, but glass isn't fake until you try to make it look rusty.

I don't mind fiberglass cars, there are certainly some very nice, well done ones around.

For me personally, I gotta have steel. Fiberglass is allright for other folks, though.

Don't be surprised if your opinion changes over the years. If you really like the style that is the most prevalent on this board then it will grow on you. Being close won't cut it any more. A fiberglass look-a-like just won't be enough. Most people don't get infected enough and get over it. For some, it's just not in their means to get there.

If it's the flavor of the week that you are currently chasing then it will fade and you'll move on.

If it burrows down into your heart over a long period of time then you will be able to understand our feelings. Reading a paragraph or two won't ever convince you or move you. It takes longer than that.

The part that is so sad is that many of the people that don't "get it" have to disparage people that do feel the emotional pull. It turns into... us agin them.

You can not preach to or convert anybody to your tastes and personal commitments. All you can do is show others what is important to you and if they like it great. If they don't so what.

If you are still doing this 25 years from now, my bet is you won't be scouring the country side looking for a Wescott deuce roadster but you'll be picking up the cheap original steel bodies that are suddenly flooding the narrow market when all of us old hoarders kick the bucket. Maybe by then you might think WOW maybe I do have a chance to own a real Deuce roadster. After 25 years you might be able to understand. If not it's no big deal.

Please just stay neutral and try to understand the people from both sides of the argument. Neither side is "correct". It's just an emotional feeling that runs deep and can't be "converted". Time may change your mind but a paragraph or two never will.

I'd personally never own a glass car, maybe has to do with my name. I don't have a problem with glass repops for others untill it crosses the line to kit cars. I hate when people call their "street beast" a 34 Ford!!!

I think glass is fine as long as it's a quality piece. If people have to ask if it is glass or steel, it's passed the test as I see it.

Glass or steel, it's still %100 more hot rod than I've got. Stop sweating the small shit and enjoy it.

If you're asking for gut instinct opinions - I can only speak for myself, but when I find out a car is glass it's like a subconscious turnoff. So much so, that I think it should be against the law to call these cars 32's or to label them with a year that they wer NOT produced. Those 70+ years of hard driving, dents, dings, scratches, rust were hard earned. To just waltz into a store and buy a brand spanking new "32" or whatever, even if it is repopped steel just doesn't ring true with my mental ethics. Just my two pennies.

I would rather have dents and rust than cracks and splitters...

I sure you could find a real nice steel model A body for the same price as a glass body.

To me it would be like finding out that the really hot chick at the bar has a penis!

Some of the European guys on here might be ok with that. (just kidding)
    but not me.

listen to that nagging feeling your getting,...I don't think it will ever go away.

  27. Weasel, this needs to be your new sign-out line!

Well said. Just 'cause you know they're fake doesn't mean you don't want to touch 'em.

I'd prefer steel for resale value, and... just because. But I'd also be more than happy to ride around in your 'glass A. But who the hell really cares what any of us think - we're not the ones writing the check.

I like the way a door slams shut on a steel car. I have no interest in owning a glass car, but I'll never slam someone else who has one either. Glass has gotten so mainstream you can't help but accept it for what it is.
If I want a '32 bad enough, I'll get an original body and go from there, thats just me.

When did traditional start??? What year was that again.
The word traditional is as overrated, as the term Rat Rod.
Just because "they" did it, in the past, does not mean, it should have been done.
I think there is no reason to "settle" for fiberglass, since there is still some old iron out there, it just takes a little more work, finding the real deal as opposed to picking up the phone and calling Wescott.
Having said that, I encourage everyone to buy fiberglass, so there is more real steel for the ones that appreciate the historical value, and thats not a monetary value I'm talking about.
