I think he's great but I also feel as if people have forgotten about him as a builder, just look at the shop it's kind of run down and it looks like he just has no space to properly store his cars.

  6. nah this year he is being honored with some sort of lifetime achievement award at Detroit Autorama, i was luckly to catch him because he was about to get on a plane for the east coast.

A legend, still doing what he does best, after all these years.
That guy is amazing. The king of fades.

    Thanks for the pics.

He doesn't seem to be aging either. He's a master for sure. I love that the shop hasn't changed in appearance. I can't believe a traditional hot rod board would call that shop "run down" either. It's got patina baby! Have we learned nothing? I don't think it's neglect, I think it's cool. He is focused on making cars. Let other people paint buildings. Pure legend.

  16. WELLLLL after I told Gene of my quest he got on the phone and called one person after the other, leaving messages, getting calls back, and finally got me hooked up with Larry Watson contact info. So we will see what happens there....

    Stay Tuned for PART 4!!!

Amazing isn't it? how someone can be judged by the appearance of his workshop not his reputation.
It looks OK to me,In fact if it were mine I'd probably put some cover buildings (car ports) up by now .
The government here would force him to comply ( read 'clean up piles of parts and cars...') with work placed health and safety laws.

I have had the honor of knowing Gene, aka Windy, for a few years now and have I watched him working on numerous occasions from his old shop in the Valley. He must have found the secret to eternal youth - he looks twenty years younger than he is. So much energy, so much p***ion for what he does and when he goes at something it is like a blur, he is so fast. This guy is 80 years old and has more energy than a bunch of teenagers - simply unbelievable.

I seen him work round the clock and bust his *** to get a car finished for a show - seems like almost every time he has a show deadline. He is without doubt the most prolific of all customizers and it is all hands on - not delegating to a group of craftsmen. To boot, he is the nicest, most self effacing, kindest and friendly guy you could ever hope to meet. He should be an inspiration to all - no wonder he is a living legend.

We can all only wish to be as mentally alert and on the ball and physically empowered when we reach Gene's age. This man is an absolute phenomenon in the truest sense of the word.

Gene is truly amazing,... really, how many guys are still going to be busting out customs at 80 years old and racing dry lakes?

He has been a hero of mine for a long time as well. I love how messed up his place is. All of these cars, some famous are just filthy. Even the paint booth looks like ****. It just makes it so much cooler and amazing that these jewels come out of there. That guy is incredible. He does look young huh.

look back a few pages and read comments from females about some customisers. You'll find his secret. it's the Same one that was imparted to me many years ago.." you're only as old as the girl you are feeling..."
