how many of you guys have a valid inspection of your rods? i know i'm going to have a **** time trying to get mine up to par. no windshield wipers. no side view mirrors. etc. let's hear your stories
Finally, an occasion where California is more lax than other states! No inspection needed here. Eat it. (But stay away, we have got too many damn people already)
In NJ if you register your car with Historic Plates you are not required to have it inspected. This is how I have my '27 Roadster. Like Bort62 said, here in NJ we have too many damn people already as well!
I carry Antique plates both on my car (54) and on my truck (58). The truck is my daily work truck and I average 100 - 150 miles a day with it. Been doing this for about 5 years now, no inspection, and no problems. Also 08' is the year they are up, so you'd be getting your whole 5 years worth.
Antique plates are the easiest, cheapest way to go legally theres a lot of limitations. Best to find a fellow rodder in the inspection business. I'll bet someone on the HAMB in your area knows of one.
Wow, yes, finally CA is more lax in something. But reality is, you should just get that stuff on your car as soon as you can if you are going to drive it around for your own safety and others - wipers and mirrors, that's pretty basic stuff. I'd hate to get into an accident and then be blamed because I had no mirrors and/or wipers, etc. But, I guess if you ONLY drive it in good weather and are extra extra careful to actually look around you well enough, you could get by ok. Hopefully you at least have working tail lights.
this is a good question cause i have often wondered this. i'm ***uming most of us don't bother with inspection. my car isn't inspected as of now, hopefully one day haha i'm also curious about you guys running antique plates. here in PA, technically you can only have antique tags if the car is stock. plus many driving limitations, like no driving at night. is it different in NJ and TX?
Geez, I'd get nailed within 5 minutes if I drove in PA with an expired (or non-existent) inspection. It probably won't matter, because I'll probably never be able to get the damn thing ***led anyway. Things are getting brutal here.
i cant be bothered with inspection even though most of my cars will p***. my 64 big block corvette 526 ci 13.5 to 1 running slicks on the street with small baffles in the side pipes. never got a ticket for no inspection would p*** cops and they would wave. if the car looks like a pile of **** plan on getting pulled over. if it looks nice they wont bother with it.
Go to your inspection station and tell them you want a print out of needed equipment for your year car.I know we can do this in NY, and there is a lot of equipment that wasn't required on the older vehicles.
What kind of car? In Harris Co. (Texas) emission tests are required for any car newer than 25 years after that it is "safety" inspection only. Texas also only requires on the test what was on the car new. But the Model A had high beams, rear view mirror, brake light, tail light and emergency brake.... The real problem is that so may of the guys at the inspection stations don't know what was required in the past. The rules are all there you just have to find someone who will look them up. My feeling is I won't drive it without the very basic equipment, 3 brake lights, turn signals etc.
Technically, the historic plates are for stock cars only. Lots of cars that have these plates are not stock. You are supposed to submit pic's with the application to show this. Will be a problem if this is enforced.
When Mike Huckabee was governor of Arkansas, he got the legislature to do away with auto inspections, period.
You got that right. Were I live I have seen the cops driving down the street at night with there spot light on looking for inspection and plate stickers. They got me a few time on the street with my Triumph chopper. All I ever get is a warning. I guess its because I am a retired Fire Fighter. Other are not so lucky. i know the town I worked in They would set and look for inspection. You guys going to the wheels of Time show in Macungie Keep that in mind if your going through Emmaus. I think the cops there see who can get the most outdated inspections.
Ha ha. I got a NSRA inspection sticker on my Hudson last year at the Tampa show.I think just because its the 1st time in thirty some years that I've owned a ride that actually could p*** an inspection...
my 34 has a PA street rod plate which requires an annual safety inspection but not an emission inspection. Been driving it for over 15 years with no h***le or problems.
Ah a topic near and dear to my heart. I've got a Jeep that's a little too tall, and needs to go on the emissions dyno for its emissions test. I can't get a sticker for it because they'll ask what year, and when I tell them, they'll say it's 'too tall' so they don't have to go through the motions of strapping it to the dyno to do the test. The new vehicles are just plug-in-the-computer and test. I think they're just lazy. So my Jeep has no sticker. My E-type Jag -- it's got the original thin-rim steering wheel, and if I let some fat-**** monkey get in and drive it through the inspection station, he'll likely rip the **** out of the wheel getting in or out, and then when he jacks it up to check the front end, if it's jacked in the wrong place he'll ruin the whole damn car. So no inspeciton on the Jag. My hot rod's not done, but we'll see -- that should be fun too. God forbid up here though, if I were to get in an accident, and there were no inspection sticker, I'm sure the insurance company would decline payment, which means some blood****ing lawyer would come after my house. All in all, the whole setup ****s pretty bad. Pete
Down here in Florida, there are no inspections required for any vehicle, no matter the age. That includes both safety and emissions. Based on some of the daily driver **** I have seen rolling around on the highways though, a safety inspection could well be worth while.
PA is super tough on "modified" cars. You can't run an antique plate on anything that does not look 100% original. So if you have chopped and dropped model A with no wipers and a shrunken head for a shift knob don't expect to get an antique plate, but that's common sense for most of us. The thing I don't like is that some guys out there get an antique plate on their car just so they don't have to get a regular inspection..which is alright...but they don't maintain the vechicle at all. My buddy works in a shop where they restore cars and he tells me all the time about non mechanically inclined people who slap on an antique plate to avoid inspection....they don't know how to do regular maintenence nor do they take it in for regular stuff...then the car breaks down..or worse ..loses a ball joint or doesn't stop while driving...and the owner wonders why it happened. To them washing and waxing is all they need to do. It's really scary. Now in Pa, the whole "Streed Rod" plate thing is also what alot of guys do for their "modified" hot rods. It's a real pain in the A$% process but it lets you run a no fender, no bumper, chopped, etc. car but you'll need wipers, turn signals, real gl***, and a good mechanically sound car. Ughhhh..I'm moving to Ca.
