Conway High auto body class....HAMB style!

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by drdave, Feb 20, 2008.

  1. Dr.Dave, GTMO for another week, Kentucky after that.. One far east another far west after that, not sure the which first. Maybe catch ya 'all in April..

    Get the carb issue solved???

  2. You be one busy dude!

I think I finally have the carb thing sorted out. Between crummy fuel filters, a leaking float and worn throttle shafts, I have finally ended up with a fresh carb. It just came in today. Hope to run by the school and drop it on. Still have a broken motor mount, which makes shifts interesting, and just discovered a crack in my exhaust manifold. Guess it's time to put the split manifold on a some new pipes. :D

    Travel safe!

I heard about that float that wouldn't float... I don't think I have ever heard of that one...

I have some high temp putty that works great for cracked exhaust manifolds. I fixed a large hole in my flathead manifold. You do have to bake it in the oven, but just do it when Michelle is gone.

James, I was just showing the kids the pics of your burb last week......I would like to talk to you about letting the kids do some work on it.

I find a ton of people who want newer cars painted....but I am making them learn all of the metal work and proper use of fillers first.
There is a Corvette that has been in the shop for 3 years that just needs squrited. I like getting in projects that are closer to their level, and they just happen to be of Hot Rod nature........I can already tell I will be adding some converts to the fray.

  6. hmmm- new kids on the block ---sander?

  7. Took my dad by the school today for a "field trip" on his bypass surg recovery. The kids have been working hard and are in the final stages of filler and are blocking, blocking, blocking! Kevin told me he thought they might have it ready to shoot by the end of the week. Took a few more pics for everyone to follow along. Some of these boys need to pull their pants up, though.

Kevin also showed me some pinstriping one of the guys did. This kid has only been playing with pinstripe brushes for a couple of weeks on and off and this is what he did. Gotta say I'm pretty impressed for fresh outta the bucket! The kid can layout a decent design and get it pretty symmetrical already. This boy has promise!

Dave, The car is looking great and I bet you haven't been sleeping to well lately ! How many kids do they have working on the car and who is going to get to shoot it? And I hear you about the pants all the way. Everyone has the right to be different but I would go nutz trying to walk around like that :)

  12. Talked with Kevin one day at the local tool and paint store. I think the students are lucky to have someone like him as an instructor. He's very excited about that job/hobby.

  13. Thanks guys!

Don, you are too funny! I'm really hoping that I have that carb issue settled and that I will be able to drive it home under it's own power....we'll see if Kevin can even get it to idle into the booth and back out. LOL.

Mike, there are a few classes working on it. Each class is two hours and will have maybe 6 or 8 kids at a time working on it. Kevin said he is being choosy on who does what...the lesser skilled guys are sanding less critical stuff, like the fiberglass filler that will get another coat on it anyhow. He said he's going to let his two best guys do the final sanding and the actual spraying (it is their practice car before putting real paint on a Corvette that is in there). I'm really hoping to throw some scallops on it, too, if I can get time to lay them out. They are painting the car black and I plan on copper scallops pretty much like Watson's Grapevine Chevy. The only trick is getting the scallops to reconcile around the trunk and back window as his was a sedan rather than the Fleetline. That little detail is what is keeping me awake right now. :)

Hey Mick! Boy, I sure am hoping it will be out and about in the next couple of weeks. I had really, really hoped I would be able to bring it to Dewey, but it has been less than reliable around town lately (you'll note Don's comment above....he got me towed home after the last breakfast). I even talked about trailering it (can a primered car be a trailer queen? lol) to the Stray Kat, but I can't get the wife, kids and all our stuff for the weekend stuffed into the cab of the truck. LOL. Next year for sure!
