that lovely tweeeeee sound of an electcric fan or the blade of a a mechanical fan higher than the top of the grill shell on a channeled modle A?
That's what you call an avoidance-avoidance conflict. The lesser of two evils. I've actually been thinking about this regarding my 8BA. I have decided not to run a fan, but devise some way to slide a puller electric in between the radiator and engine when I am going to be in stop and go traffic. Of course, I'll have to use all the known flathead cooling stategies (Skips Pumps/etc). Having the fan up high kind of defeats the purpose as it can't pull the air throught the radiator as efficiently.
If you get the Spal curved blade fans and run a hood you won't get that sound (at least not so far on my stuff) To answer your question I would have to say the engine driven fan above the grill shell is lamer.
To answer your question I would have to say the engine driven fan above the grill shell is lamer.[/quote] I don't know, I always liked the way you looked through the prop on the old bi-planes and such.
Puking your coolant after being stuck in traffic for 5 minutes is lamer. Go with the electric fan and enjoy driving it. fabricate a sheetmetal shroud to conceal it, chrome it or paint it black, and be done with it. -Brad
I've always hated the look of electric fans, but I know sometimes they're unavoidable and in a lot of cases more effecient...do what ya gotta do man, as long as it's on the road and works well...
yeah i'll have to go 'lectric. now i just need to find a bracket to to low mount the alt on a pontiac 400
Me too man, if you find one let me know...I might wing up making mine...I shoved a 400 into my '40 Plymouth...I'm having the same fan problems...
How about posting a pic of the said car... I would like to se HOW the Hell you got that fan up so high !! I have a DeSoto Hemi in a 6" channeled '30 Ford & the fan is smack in the center of the Radiator. A pic is worth a thousand answers
Don't like either. My dad's model A pick up has an electric fan and it sure gets in the way of that sweeet flathead sound.
here is the latest pic from fotomat del fuzzy. the cowl and grille are at height. and due to some clearance issues the motor is up a bit high. the fan isnt on there but you can seel the alt barcket and it is above the the grille
AHHH I see, So i assme you have stepped the frame in front ? Thats yer problem is the engine is WAYYY to high, So really the only thing to do is put an electric fan on.. Lame or not, Thats the answer. A Lil off track, But i still cant understand why guys build these cars so Damn low that the engine hangs out the top, And CREATE problems such as this ? How much kick is in the rear ? Like 3 feet ? OR ...... If you have the room, Build a Fan off the Crank like a '40 Ford
yeah the front is is stepped. the step is 3" the rear is 15" i think if i had the frame to rebuild i would do it alot differnt and i have changed alot on it already. there are point where i just want to get the damn thing done so i could build someting else. but i think it'll be cool when i'm done
My fan is right in the middle too! I don't have a close pic of the front though. Sorry. I'm getting tired of this pic but the car is 2000 mi away right now.
cut the fan down a bit... then again, with an alternator out in the open i dont know why you are worried about the electric fan
I think west coasters have been asking east coasters that same question for a long time. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=236176 Why? I guess cuz that's how they like em... and always have.
i dont think either is as lame as tha engine height, so go with the electric.... be harder to kill your self on that than a fan idling on top of your rad shell, id hate to lean in too far while adjusting something and smoke the fan with my forehead.....
because thats the way eastcoasters think its done on the west coast. the west does sublte lowering, and in an effort to prove they are cooler than the west, they chop channel section and Z even more. because everyone knows more is always better....
Not exactly... I know many a west coaster with odd ball stances these days. In today's melting pot, I think it's pretty much personal preference. Me? I like the tires to be in the wheel wells... That said, I've seen some cars with super low stances that have potential. I'd like to see more of them finished and detailed. There are only so many "patina" cars I can bare - ya know?
Personally, I could stand to "bare" a few of them, then re-paint them all shiny and stuff. (Ohhh...lookit mr. Spellcheck Grammar Nazi! this will ultimately be why I get banned.)
Low is Cool to a point, My car is lower than the Wheels Wells, But isnt slammed on the ground. The "T" we built my Daughter is even with the Wheel Wells as it is a "POST WAR" Style car. I am talking the whole "BROKEN LOOK, DRAGGING ROCKER PANLE, "Zed" FRONT & REAR CARTOON CARS" I looked thru the pics Ryan offered up on his link & only saw one Over Low Hot Rod.... Customs are another story & even most of them today are to low in front. Just my Observation & opinion
No. I agree with you... I'm not into the super low either. That said, there is post around here somewhere with images of like 10 hot rods(on a houston drag strip maybe?) channeled way over the rails and sitting super low. Shots were from the early 50's... I couldn't believe it. In any case and like I said, I don't like the rear reveal to be cut off by the tire at all... I think it hurts Henry's lines... There are some exceptions though - most of them are race cars.
Here's one of them: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=229575&highlight=houston+drag+strip+pics Still, not the thread I was thinking of... Regardless, super low cars were quite a bit more prevalent that you would think in the early 50's. Most of them (obviously) were east coast cars.
