I've done some research on past posts for shooting flake, and it's a huge help. But I've heard a few different opinions on this, and wanted some more from people who have actually shot metalflake. I was just wondering on how much a flake job hides or shows imperfections in bodywork. I'm planning on shooting a gold flake on my car (pic below) and I suck at bodywork, it's pretty straight, and I've got a lot more to do, but I've heard that flake shows imperfections more than gloss black??? Just wondering what u guys thought... Thanks alot.

i wouldnt waste material. you have to have a good base to work off of . it would be like putting an f1 car on a model a frame that had been t boned . all im trying to say is take the time and do at least some of the body work . if you get into a pickle call me ian . the chop turned out sweet and... my bags put it on the ground nice work...
it all depends on how long you want the flake to last .

    I can't imagine how.

I can see how flake could mask small imperfections, but it's not going to hide real problems in body work. For what it's worth, I really like the old school flake system.

In my opinion (and thats what you asked for), If you are going to the trouble to flake the car, I would make it as smooth as possible. That car will be way too nice to put a half cocked paintjob on. Flake is no different than any other gloss paint. If not prepped right it's going to show. Thats just from my limited experience (2 cars and a bunch of odds and ends) with it. Very sweet car when it's finished I would say though. I think Gold would look nice.

I wouldn't count on fresh paint of any type to hide bad bodywork.

    Keep sanding.

hahaha, don't worry, I have a lot of sanding before I flake it. I've only been working on the roof so far. I'm pretty sure I can get the thing straight, just not gloss black straight... And notrod, thanks for the bags, they worked out great. I just need to run fatter air line, I have 1/4 inch and it takes awhile, but that solenoid block I got from you should work perfect with bigger line....

Anyways, I've got way too much time working on this friggin pile to do a shitty paint job, that's why I was wondering, I don't want to shoot the flake and find out my bodywork wasn't as good as I thought.

I may have to hit u up. We just had the city come by yesterday and said we can't make anymore noise or work outside or some crap at our shop, I may relocate to my garage and then finish it. Thanks, I definately would at least like to have u at least look the thing over before I paint it.

As simple and silly as it may sound, the rule of "if you can feel it, you will see it" applies to metalflake, as well as shiny paint. You may have a level of forgiveness with a lighter flake, but remember that when it isn't "popping" in the sun to where it blinds the viewer, any waves in the body work will show, no matter how light the color is.
Body work just sucks, but be patient and it will pay off in the end....BTW, remember to keep that gun at a right angle to the surface, heavy overlap, and keep "swishing" the cup, or it will have stripes like a zebra... enjoy

Cool, thanks, I'm hoping to get some cash and buy one of those flake buster guns, I think I have easily another month of bodywork though.
