I have a buddy who'd like to put disc brakes on his 60 Cad. He has heard that 68-9ish Cadillac spindles are a straight bolt-on deal and would like to try a set. He found some, but the seller won't remove the spindles from the parts car unless he pays for them and won't return his $ if they don't fit. He doesn't want to spend the cash just to find out that they don't fit. Has anyone had any experience with this swap? Anyone have advice? thanks!
Shortbus: my brother's friend did such a swap on a 60 vert for another friend...I'll see if I can find out what parts they used. I'm pretty sure they were all original Cadillac parts. This is the car:
i did that very swap on a 65 deville, worked great and all i had to change was the brake hoses. i think even up to 1976 would work too. i have never looked at a 1960 spindle though so i can't tell you about swaping to a 60.
Unknown if this is useful info but 59-60 Buicks used some of the same parts as the Cads up front. Maybe you could look for a later Buick to swap disc's from.
Sorry to take so long Shortbus.....but I've got more info on the way. My bro's buddy HASN'T actually completed the conversion (I thought they had). Anyway, they're using '71 Caddy discs with Holden Commodore (Pontiac GTO) calipers. Can't say for sure if they're using the '60 stub axles. I think there's a bit a work to do with mounting the calipers yet... Will keep you posted with more info as it arrives.
I did a little research on this when I had my 60. If you have the means to make caliper brakets, disks and bearings from a '76 Deville, 88-91 1500 PU and I want to say it's either 79 or 81 Blazer (can't remember to well on that one though)all fit the stock spindle. You will have to drill a hole or 2 to mount the calipers though. This will give you a better idea of what's involved. Click me! HTH.
Well I don't know if you got all the info you needed about the swap but I thought I would make it easy for you this place makes a kit to swap them over to Disk breaks its near the bottom of the page and they have alot of other good parts http://www.allcads.com/parts.html ENJOY! Crow
Shortbus, I've been looking for the same thing for my 60. The allcads one is some serious money. I found a place on e-gay that makes the brackets and lists what other parts you will need for a lot less money. He goes by the name Scarebird and makes brackets for a shitload of different cars. Check him out, I think that is the route I am going to go.
true that on the having everything part unless they have hundreds of acerage was kinda thinking they may have an idea of parts you may need to do the swap as well or be able to measure out the spindles Im going to be doing the same thing to my 59 here shortly and hoping it gose well also was wondering if anyone knew any place or something that dose the rocker panels and area right aove the skirts for the rear wheels have a little cancer problemany info is great not even sure where I can get the sheet metal ATM
